The Sacred College of Cardinals a few days ago he gave the Church a new Pontiff: Leone XIV. From Catholics and consecrated people, we want and hope that this burdensome choice was - if not exactly guided - at least inspired by the Holy Spirit in that mysterious way with which God is capable of directing the world and events, even those who blatantly seem to deny his action and presence.

In a recent article of mine (cf.. WHO) I have already had the opportunity to explain the role of the Holy Spirit within the great rite of the Conclave, certainly the action of the Spirit of God remains mysterious to man most of the time and therefore it is difficult to want to claim control and fathom all the subtleties that the Holy Spirit weaves into the lives of us men, including that permission to error and even to sin which for man becomes the opportunity to rediscover divine grace.

How not to remember, about this, the apostle Peter himself at the moment of his denial, a moment of great tragedy and infidelity, in the face of all those experiences of faith that Peter had the opportunity to see while being with Jesus in the three years of public life. How Peter knows how to repay the Master after having perjured his love and faithfulness? With those words heavy as lead: "I don't know him". And if Peter tries to deny Christ, However, Christ knows Peter and his heart well and for this reason he prays for him and invites him in advance on the road of return:

«Simone, Simone, there: Satan sought you to sift you like wheat; but I prayed for you, so that your faith does not fail. And you, once converted, confirm your brothers " (LC 22,31-32).

Of these two verses from the Gospel of Luke the invitation to conversion and the return of the apostle is fundamental. Jesus almost seems to say to Peter that his task as a guide in the faith and as head of the apostolic college and of the Church cannot ignore the capacity for continuous conversion and a return to himself in which Christ himself is waiting for him. How can we not see in this that penetrating look of Christ towards Peter after his denial. That look full of mercy that penetrates the soul, «in the inner man», where Peter finally recognizes the truth in the Truth. And the truth is that Peter is only such when he knows how to be «Kephas» which in its original meaning that our Eastern Christian brothers know how to give - more than what we Westerners are used to interpreting - means unstable and shaky stone. You Peter are an unstable stone until you find stability in Christ who is the cornerstone, until you trust his command to cast the nets when it is broad daylight and to feed his sheep, until you remember that Christ asks you to love him and you can only offer him your poor good.

Having faith before your eyes the person of the Blessed Apostle Peter, we can legitimately ask ourselves who Pope Leo XIV will be? Personally, I want nothing more than for him to be a herald of the risen Christ and to re-propose the Easter faith to the world every day.. This is the most urgent thing today in the Church and in the world. The problems are there, reforms are necessary, peace is a cry to always invoke, the dialogue, hospitality and political and international relations are good things but without the solidity of Christ as the cornerstone none of this saves and restores hope to man. In this dance of human freedom, the man Robert Francis Prevost will have to disappear, to finally make way for Pope Leo XIV, who with effort and suffering will have to make himself transparent so that Christ may manifest himself in him.

From faithful Christians we are called to abandon the colorful fans immediately papolatrics the “I like it”, “I do not like” which equate the Holy Father to a leader politician or to a influence with their own ideologies and their own entourage Power. All these things cannot stand the test of the faith of the apostle Peter who confesses:

"Man, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life; we have believed and known that you are the Holy One of God" (GV 6,68-69).

Pope Leo in his first homily (cf.. our article WHO) he has already reminded us that we must accept Christ unconditionally, although this truth is considered absurd by the world and the powerful, it remains the only way to walk as Christians and to correspond to the Petrine ministry which from Peter reaches us today.

Another thing to avoid and not hope for is to make Pope Leo XIV an emulator of previous pontificates, he is not a Francis, a Benedict, a John Paul II: he is Leo. Living on nostalgia, with your head turned to the past, to the point of giving a stiff neck does not belong to Christians. Nostalgia is the fertile ground in which the divisive factions of traditionalists are born, of progressives, of the sedevacantists and other pathological ways of being and feeling that oppose and suffocate the true Easter faith.

Witnessing in recent days the various attempts to drag the Pope by the mozzetta to bring him to one's side - ecclesial and political - is an unbecoming and childish spectacle. Time will be able to give us the pulse of this new pontificate in which the Holy Spirit - as well as that friendly family of seagulls who made their nest near the chimney of the Sistine Chapel - will be on the lookout to ensure that the boat of the Church is not definitively sunk by the seas.

To be, as we'll see, they seem like a program for the Church that started to preside, The figure within which he will want to move and even in what way he feels that he is involved.

Referring to a personal reading of the beautiful papal homily (WHO), I just want to underline three aspects.

The first and most important is the reference to Christ. It might seem redundant to underline it: of whom a pontiff should speak if not of Jesus? But the fact that he immediately mentioned, At the first appearing from the central loggia of the Basilica of San Pietro and now here in his first homily, it is significant. He said that Pietro's words remember in the Gospel «You are the Christ, the Son of the living God " (Mt 16,16) they express "in summary the heritage that for two thousand years the Church, through the apostolic succession, keep, deepens and transmits. Jesus is Christ, the Son of the living God, that is, the only savior and the detector of the father's face ". «To make yourself close and accessible to men, He revealed himself to us in the confident eyes of a child, in the lively mind of a young man, in the mature features of a man (The joy and hope, 22), until it appears to his, After the resurrection, with his glorious body. Thus showed us a model of holy humanity that we can all imitate, together with the promise of an eternal fate that instead exceeds every limit and capacity ".

The second aspect that I want to underline the papal homily is precisely the reference to holiness. He sees it as a gift, but also as a path of personal and community transformation. Holiness that exceeds merits and limits because it anticipates our birth (cf.. Gives 1,5) And thanks to the baptismal rebirth he leads us and makes us participate in the mission of Christ. A task that involves the Pope firsthand and then the whole Church: «City placed on the mountain (cf. AP 21,10), ark of salvation that navigates through the waves of history, Lighthouse that illuminates the nights of the world. And this not so much thanks to the magnificence of its structures or for the grandeur of its buildings ..., as for the holiness of its members, of that "people that God has purchased because they proclaim me the admirable works of him, who called you from the darkness to its wonderful light " (1PT 2,9).

In the end, A third reason I like to pin from the homily of the Holy Father: the comparison with the world, including the ecclesial one of believers. The Pope says:

“It's not a trivial question, indeed it concerns an important aspect of our ministry: the reality in which we live, with its limits and potentiality, his questions and his beliefs ".

As happened in the days of the Lord The answers to his question, «People, Who says he is the son of man?», they appeared incomplete and sticks, So even today the world often misunderstands the Christian message due to excess of sufficiency or overhanging. but yet, The Pope says:

This is the world that is entrusted to us, in which, as Pope Francis taught us many times, We are called to witness the joyful faith in Jesus Salvatore. One of the serious problems that this pontificate will leave to the next conclave it is given by the fact that the cardinal voters do not know each other among them. The Church, disoriented and lost, lives in a state of irreversible decadence, we have long since passed the threshold of no return. The Church of today is no longer in Gethsemane, not even on the cross on Calvary, it is living the most dramatic moment in its way: that silence that seems almost a total absence of God. A space of time that goes from sunset on Good Friday to Easter Sunday. Between the closing of the tomb and the empty tomb of the Risen One, a sort of divine emptiness is experienced, before which the only appropriate thing is that silence that cannot be understood and lived except through faith, hope and charity.

Everyone knows how to speak, especially inappropriately, few know how to keep quiet and live that great silence that leads us to the resurrection. There are those who cannot remain silent and gossip by playing predictions about the future pope, in a completely worldly dimension, and those who understand the importance of remaining silent, in a completely mystagogical dimension.

I can therefore only repeat, below, what I have already written in the second part of an article of mine published on March 2, while the deceased August Pontiff was hospitalized at the Policlinico Agostino Gemelli in Rome between life and death: «And if simony were to come back into fashion at the next conclave?» (See HERE)

To deny that this Pontiff will leave a confused, divided and quarrelsome Church due to trials open on all fronts, based on the unusual principle that «the important thing is to open the trials», without however concluding them and bringing them to full completion, is to deny the clearest evidence of the facts. However, who tells us that in several years we will not have to thank the pontificate of Francis for having preserved and saved the Church from problems and damage which without his actions, not understandable at the time, would have been greater, or even irreparable? Francis is a complicated man who fits into a very complicated historical moment, any judgment given in the present about him and his pontificate, could be completely wrong tomorrow.

It would not be the first time that certain men, not understood at the time in their actions, were later celebrated as extraordinary personalities who were decades ahead of the present time in which they lived. This is why sometimes, precisely when one is perplexed, disoriented and grieve for certain ambiguous attitudes and not even easy to decipher, despite exercising legitimate critical sense, is necessary and prudently suspending judgement..

One of the serious problems this pontificate will leave for the next conclave is this: tthe cardinal electors do not know each other. The last secret consistory took place in 2015. Let’s clarify: the consistory is the assembly of cardinals convened by the Roman Pontiff and can be secret, public, semi-public. What is called “secret” is that in which only the cardinals gathered to discuss in a private, i.e. secret, form with the Supreme Pontiff participate, regarding the various problems of the Church and its government. Today, to the serious problem of the cardinals who do not know each other, there is another one unknown to the secularists of the international left who glorify «the poor Church for the poor», so much does poverty in the homes and on the lives of others excites them, praising this pontificate which has appointed dozens of cardinals «coming from the peripheries of the world» and «from the poorest countries».

Let us not dwell the poor doctrinal and theological training of several of these holy men coming from those privileged situations for which today they can deserve a cardinal’s purple: «the suburbs» … «the poor countries». Several of these cardinals are bishops of countries where the presence of Catholics cannot be defined as even a small minority: on the island of Tonga, of which Cardinal Soane Patita Paini Mafi is bishop, there are around 10,000 baptized Catholics. Giorgio Marengo, apostolic vicar of Mongolia, where Catholics number 1,200 baptized out of 3,300,000 inhabitants, was created cardinal in 2020, at the age of just 46. These cardinal electors, emblem of the «poor Church for the poor» of the various «existential peripheries», govern local churches that can survive and live in contexts of great hardship and authentic poverty thanks to the donations that come to them from rich local churches, or from large foundations on linked to them. To be clear: a single Austrian, German, Australian, Canadian or North American parish can maintain an entire diocese in certain poor countries in Latin America, Asia and Africa, where the relationship between the Euro and the Dollar and their national currency is totally disproportionate in terms of purchase value.

Tomorrow, in the Sistine Chapel, a group of cardinals from these countries, rigorously chosen by Holy Father among the exponents of the so-called most advanced progressivism, will with delicate ease make it clear that they hold the purse strings, leaving dozens of “poor-peripheral-existential” cardinals the forced choice based on the survival of their local churches that can only live thanks to external aid. On the first Sunday of Lent It traditionally reads the evangelical pericope of the temptations of Jesus in the desert.

In fact, the Holy Spirit in the desert He puts the humanity of Christ in the face of evil so that he can fight him and choose in the freedom of the Son of remaining in obedience to the Father. In the same way the Holy Spirit acts in us, manifesting us the scandal of the mystery of iniquity that can only be won by remaining in obedience to God, rooted in his word: "It is written, it was said " (cf.. LC 4,4. 8.12). It is no longer time for man, how it happened to the progenitors in Eden, to hide because of the sin or the disconcerting devastation that it causes in life, But through the Spirit he is called to act, to challenge the sword (cf.. Ef 6,17) and to give war to the evil one who has already been rejected in the humanity of Christ.

Lent becomes in this way, year by year, an ever greater and different path of spiritual awareness. A journey of listening to the inner master - the Holy Spirit - who encourages the man to "see", indeed we could say, to experience him: "Come on, You see the works of the Lord " (cf.. Shall 46, 9). And what are the works that the Holy Spirit, as a lord, carry out? These are those same works that we see realized in the earthly life of Jesus and that he proposes to those who intend to follow him: Venection and contemplation of the Father, annihilation of oneself and a gift of themselves to men.

Lent lends itself to this triple dynamic so that, Under the careful guidance of the Holy Spirit, There is no more space for disordered emotion or apocalyptic revelations, Since everything leads to a conformation of one's life to that of Christ that only the Spirit is able to operate in fullness in man. Let's see how this happens, through three movements.

The first movement corresponds to an ascense motion, Which means fixing the gaze not on one's own misery as a sinner, but lift his eyes to God who is Father. The second movement is an abysmal motion, It coincides with the reality of the cross. LC 14,13-14).

The third movement is a horizontal motion, It coincides with that "until the end" of GV 13,1, that Jesus first acts in the Upper Cenacle with the Apostles, But then he fully realizes for everyone on Calvary. There Jesus makes men full of himself to men. Just as the Holy Spirit had pushed him into the desert, almost out of salvific necessity, Now he makes him go up the lounge of the ordeal where the last will take place, definitive and necessary combat against the evil one; While in the meantime he proposes his alternative messianicity that contradicts his father's design: «You who destroy the temple and reconstruct it in three days, save yourself!
