When a politician he professes himself a believer and proudly defends the manifestation of sin in all its forms, not only can he not consider himself a believer, but not even maintaining within that Catholic ecclesial communion so often boasted in newspapers and television to impress unwary Christian voters.

The recent story of the Mayor of Bergamo Giorgio Gori appears sensational, not so much for its political position, very clear and evident to all, but for his alleged position as a believer, that cries out for vengeance in the sight of God and in Catholic common sense. The mayor told reporters with some pride and with clear words:

“Over the last few weeks, I have reflected for a long time on this signature which I have affixed with conviction and as a believer. I don't think that the signature and the religious belief are in contradiction " [see: WHO, WHO].

Some from the so-called silent ecclesiastical high spheres, because, as it seems, capable only of tearing up their clothes for the poor illegal immigrants who die in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea - for which we all regret with Christian pain -, should reply without further delay to this improvised "believer". Indeed, applying its own logic one could similarly affirm: as a believer I cannot prevent those with a different perception of life from having an abortion. I can't stop a woman from prostituting herself, nor to those who acquire its sexual services to favor prostitution in this way, including that of minors. And why stop taking drugs? As a believer, I am in favor of free drugs. Or is it not free, whoever, to take drugs as and when he wants? To these statements which are intended to be entirely logical, then the justifications follow. However, these are justifications that do not stand on a logical level, to be exact these: legalized abortion prevents clandestine abortion. Legalizing prostitution will take away the business of the underworld. Similarly, legalizing drugs, a large turnover of business will be taken away from the mafias. I find it really strange that no one has yet launched the workhorse: legalizing euthanasia will prevent the various Dj Fabo from having to go to a Swiss clinic and pay a large sum of money for their "end of life".

But, if a quiet citizen who is in his cottage sleeping with his wife and children, finding himself in the middle of the night with thieves in the house and having a regular firearms license, he opens the fire and leaves one dead on the ground in the living room, in that case the voices are raised in unison of the politically correct which praises the "poor thief!». It does not matter, what could have happened to that father of a family and his children, he didn't have to just shoot, because you don't kill a thief inside the house, or better: only in certain ideological cases is life sacred, namely that of the thief, not, however, that of the aborted child. To a thief who committed crime in an incorrigible and dangerous way for the life and safety of others, one can only tell, with a smile, the phrase used in the Ash Wednesday liturgy: "Get converted and believe in the Gospel". But if he decides not to convert, without hesitation he will stun the father of the family and his son with beating, to then rape his wife with his other accomplices. Things that have happened several times and are narrated by the news and by judicial documents [see WHO]. These are cases before which the unanimous chorus "Do not kill" always rises, the same choir which, however, does not rise in front of the counseling centers where chain abortions are practiced.

The Blindness of Modern Moderate Totalitarianism we can read in all its destructive wickedness in these words of the mayor of Bergamo who shows off a confused and unhealthy faith to endorse the abrogative referendum on legal euthanasia which is in contrast with both divine Revelation and the Magisterium of the Church. Blindness of a person who considers himself to be a "believer" but whose creed is certainly not that of the Lord of Life. Blindness of a "believer" whose faith more resembles Auguste Comte's liberalism with the abusive Enlightenment claim of giving man divine prerogatives, or of the socialism of Henri de Saint-Simon who sees in the positivist faith a secular salvation that has got rid of God.

Because of this, we Fathers de The Island of Patmos, in our capacity as priests and theologians we ask H.E.. Rev. Monsignor Francesco Beschi: can a believer who does not listen to Sacred Scripture and the voice of the Magisterium [which is expressed in the Apostolic Letter Good Samaritan and in the Encyclical Gospel of Life] still be said to be such, so much so as to represent a scandal for the faith of many weak and confused Christian brothers? It's possible, in the face of so much proud and persistent manifestation of sin, do not intervene forcefully, perhaps even with a canonical disciplinary action that sees excommunication as the just medicinal penalty for the offender who favors and supports the killing of a human person, thus violating their dignity and respect due to the living God and Creator? [See. Catechism of the Catholic Church NN. 2276-2279].

At this moment it would be right and right ask this public figure to account and reason for this, who impudently supports the culture of death and proclaims himself a believer. Just as it would be consoling to hear from the Pastor of the Church who is in Bergamo a word of strong condemnation and dissociation from the words of a faithful who, on the one hand it proclaims itself as such, on the other hand, it incurs the grave error and crime that exposes many to sin.

Who knows how many Bergamo Catholics, because of these words spoken by their Mayor, "Believer" and "Catholic", they will be encouraged to sign in front of market stalls or in the offices of their respective municipalities by endorsing this law? Who knows how many, on this Sunday, they will come to make Holy Communion receiving that Christ who in the sick person forced to euthanasia will still stretch his arms on the cross and torn by man's sin will offer himself as a victim to the Father to save us from the satanic deception that wants to do without God? The first, among these sacrilegious communions, it could be that of the Mayor of Bergamo himself, "Believer" and "Catholic" in favor of euthanasia?

The Bishop of Bergamo should think about it, especially considering that the Blessed martyr Saint Alexander, patron of his diocese, he did not remove the pains of witness in martyrdom for Christ. Therefore the Bishop does not withhold the pastor's testimony and save his Church from ravenous wolves, that it is not only the smugglers who transport illegal immigrants, several of which unfortunately destined to die in our waters. … the modern men of science in charge of directing the consciences of others

On the Sunday just passed I commented on a beautiful passage from the Holy Gospel in my homily [cf.. GV 6, 60-69]. As I normally do at every Sunday celebration, I frame the Gospel passage not only from an exegetical point of view but above all from an ecclesiological and pastoral point of view, letting the cursive reading of the Sunday Gospel speak to the faithful with the strength and incisiveness of the sword [See. EB 4, 12], at the same time avoiding an overly technical reading of the text that only a very few would be able to understand.

.

The Gospel of John of the Sunday just passed appears as the conclusion of the long discourse on the Bread of Life in which Christ clearly and definitively shows the truth about himself. It is in fact a great one theophany in a Eucharistic key, in which, starting from the sign of the shared bread, Jesus presents himself as the true heavenly manna that is incarnated from heaven into human existence. He was born in Bethlehem, in that place which means House of Bread, it feeds mortal man in his search for God concealed, making himself bread.

A revealing moment of Christ's identity, that, as I said, it is preceded by the necessary sign of multiplication (sharing) of loaves [See. GV 6, 1-15]. This sign is fundamental to understand that Jesus is really the true Lord who feeds his people on the earthly pilgrimage and not one of the many powerful on earth who seeks a personal gain of glory. [See. GV 6, 15]. He guides the new people of the Covenant no longer from Egypt to the Promised Land but from sin to the new covenant in his blood which is realized through the Easter events.

This is why the Eucharistic sign of shared bread it becomes essential to understand divine pedagogy and the way in which God works salvation. Jesus, although he is the Lord and the Master [See. But at the same time it is a soteriological mystery, as the Charis it is the divine plan which took its form in Jesus Christ the Savior and which finds its genesis in the Trinity as an eternal story of love for man (See. From these necessary theological prerogatives, we understand how the exercise of Charis, it absolutely cannot be configured as a humanitarian service or sentimental philanthropism. Even when it is man who operates the Charis towards a similar one we can also see Amante's tripartite Augustinian relationship, Beloved and Love. The lover is the one who acts pushed by the Father towards the beloved in whom the Son identifies himself, within the loving dynamic of the Holy Spirit.

The Charis Christian is necessary because it is there ratio with which from the man's body one reaches his soul so that soul and body together are saved in that harmonious anthropological unity that we see professed every Sunday in the Creed when we say: "I await the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come". That is, I await the resurrection of man in his totality, not just a part of him. What we already see realized in the Blessed Virgin Mary assumed into heaven in body and soul.

For this reason, if it is true that the poor need to be fed on earth, such a requirement cannot make the believer fall into the pretext utopia that claims to defeat poverty once and for all; equalize the scandalous social disparities; eradicate the relentless diseases; pacify the peoples with an indiscriminate welcome; averting the ignorance of the little ones with partial truths. little ones with partial truths.

Although today we are used to populist slogans such as "no one will be left behind" that we find abundantly on the lips of politicians as well as prelates. We must have the courage to affirm that all this is just a mirage of self-constructed salvation whose cultural and social consequences are well known and evident to all., especially in a period like the one we are going through burdened by the pandemic.

About this it would be enough to recall the words of Jesus who admonishes us: «You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me " [Mt 26, 11] an expression that certainly points towards a preferential option for the poor but, much more, defines a very clear hierarchy of values ​​that leads us to understand that without him, true God and true man, we are too poor to help the poor and unable to offer definitive salvation. And this truth today appears rather annoying and poorly digested by the human narcissism that wants to operate without God, even when it claims to do good.

This discourse allows us to formulate a correct theological approach to poverty which has nothing to do with the revolutionary pauperism so dear to a certain leftist thought or comparable to the popular social demands of the South American liberation regimes, nor to that pretext pauperism of which Judas Iscariot himself spoke, about which we refer to our video lesson: The gold of the Magi and the false love for the poor of Judas Iscariot.

Much less can we approach it with blunders social the various influence who harangue the people of followers maintaining a standard of living that is light years away from evangelical sobriety and that does not come close to that dignified poverty of the average Italian worker or pensioner.

If we want to be honest, this theological approach has nothing to do with the various models that impose themselves on public opinion and see, in the various saviors of the people, put well in the foreground by mainstream, the beginning of a new renaissance and secular humanism. Because it remains evident, in all this theological reasoning, the graft with the purest Christology in which the kenosis of the Word constitutes the visible and most eloquent self-denial through which we can find "that God who made himself poor for us, to enrich ourselves through his poverty " [See. 2Color 8, 9; Benedict XVI, Speech at the inaugural session of the 5th General Conference of the Latin American and Caribbean Bishops, 13 May 2007, 3: AAS 99 (2007), 450]. "Get busy" [cf.. GV 6, 27] says Jesus, but to do so it is necessary to go out on a mission with his authority, following the example of those seventy-two disciples who, invested with all power, they returned home full of joy [cf.. LC 10, 17] having noted firsthand that when the revelation of Christ reaches the poorest and the least [cf.. LC 10, 21] the Kingdom of Heaven is established with power. «Get busy» Jesus says again, but only after having made a decisive and privileged choice that gives Christ the primacy over our life. Jesus is the breaking point between the truth of God and the illusion of the truth of the world and whoever does not know and recognize this truth is doomed to scandal, to confusion, to escape even within the communities of believers in which one can be alone and only following the demands that Christ dictates.

This is why it appears urgent and necessary to reflect as a Church on that question that Christ poses to his disciples and to operate a serene discernment. «You want to leave too?» [See. GV 6, 67], question that sounds like a warning to the obedience of the faith that cannot find substitutes or surrogates in other people or ideals.

.

How many baptized Christians today have the thought of Christ and the Church and profess filial obedience? Few, indeed very few. Syndicalist priests are in fashion, psychologists and social workers. I cardinals electricians and LGBT friendly, lay people intent on social claims, ecclesial groups with party cards, those who fight on social networks for free and tolerant love, for the most humane and liberating euthanasia. Those who still, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, orphans of Sol of the future, they returned to the Catholic home through the window and are now being pointed out as adult Christians and teachers. In the end, there are those who in the name of tradition, strong of the Mass of all time and of the of the Latins, adorned with veils of lace, lace and lace would also be ready to dismiss a Pope in the name of their fidelity to the Church. Much better it would be for them to recognize the beating of the heart and go there, where this leads them, leaving the Church and the Gospel in good order in favor of those who really wish to know and believe in Jesus but who are prevented from doing so by these sad figures.

Indeed, if as Christians the principle for discernment is not Christ but the parliamentary principle of the majority will never establish the Kingdom of Heaven. If the demands of the world are more attractive than those of the Gospel, the value of obedience and faith will never be understood. It's still, if the word of the Magisterium is decidedly less influential than that of the various Ferragnez, Saviano, Fazio, Zan and the various gurus who appear before us every day is vain the hope of expecting a serious laity who knows how to enter the folds of the world by announcing the newness of the Word..

«[…] the Apostle explains to the Galatians that, in reality, the Covenant with God and the Mosaic Law are not indissolubly linked and the Law is not the basis of the Covenant because it came later, it was necessary and right but first there was the promise, the Alliance. Those who claim that the Mosaic Law is a constitutive part of the Covenant are out of the question. No, the Alliance is first, it is the call to Abraham. The Torah, The law in effect, it is not included in the promise made to Abraham. However, it should not be thought that Saint Paul was contrary to the Mosaic Law. No, he watched her. Let's hope Cardinal Kurt Koch don't come out, in response, with an apology message, because if he did it would offend Catholics, therefore we presbyters and scholars who have dedicated our existence to study in order to instruct, to form and enlighten the People of God increasingly in disarray.

While admitting that he does not fully know the events and history of Gino Strada, I wanted to ask: he could not be included in that group of "anonymous Christians" theorized by Karl Rahner? This question it offers me the opportunity to clarify the matter even better. First of all, "anonymous Christianity" is Karl Rahner's theorization of a concept of grace that is dangerously close to relativism. It is a belief that can make you believe in any spiritual experience, every jolt of emotionality, any philanthropic action, every religious experience hides a mark of Christianity and salvation. In the pastoral experience that we priests see every day, this concept can be translated as follows:

«Even if I don't go to Mass, I don't confess, I don't pray, it is enough to do some good work and not hate anyone to be okay ".

Or, for those openly atheists, unbelievers or simply confused the question sounds like this:

«I do more good than many Christians who judge […] it is not necessary to be a Christian to love one's neighbor and do good […] I respect everyone, I tolerate everyone, I am out of love for everyone and I am more Christian than those who eat wafers ".

At the heart of this way of thinking there is an intimate concept of faith, who loves but without compromising, believes but without taking sides, it acts but without taking a position. In the Holy Gospel, instead, we find these words:

This is a position very different that leads you to give Christ the primacy over your entire existence and recognize him as the only Savior [See. These three parables historically refer to three categories of people: the ancient Jews, Christians and pagans. To conclude, good or love is not for believers but heroic love that gives life, yes, otherwise, if this were not the case, the example of St. Maximilian Kolbe would not make sense. He who sacrificed himself for a father of a family who in that Auschwitz concentration camp must have certainly been surrounded by several "anonymous Christians" and good people, but none of them showed up to save him, except one Franciscan friar, who acted for Christ, with Christ and in Christ. And this speaks volumes about the difference between philanthropy and the great charism of charity.

This explains the substantial difference which runs between philanthropism and ideological goodness and Christian charity, which is together with faith and hope, but which of all three is the most important. It is not an easy message for our army of confused Cattocomunists to understand, and we Fathers of The Island of Patmos, in the exercise of our apostolic work, we will never stop spending ourselves, with all our human and spiritual strengths, to try to make it clear that even atheists do good philanthropism, whereas, the charity, only true Christians can do it.

However, the anti-vaccinist has an absurd answer that is always ready: does not deny that there have been several million deaths around the world, denies that they died from Covid-19, because according to him we have no proof. Needless to remind him of the 793 died in a single day on 21 March 2021 and the sad line of military trucks carrying the bodies out of Bergamo where there were no more burial and cremation sites, because the anti-vaccinist has a ready answer for this too: "It has not been proven that they died of Covid-19 because the autopsies were not performed". Faced with a similar response based on granitic illogical and anti-scientific beliefs, it can perhaps be explained that it is not possible to carry out autopsies on the bodies of a similar number of deceased in a moment of unprecedented emergency such as the one we experienced in 2020, with the hospitals exploding and the medical staff at the end of their strength? Or that maybe, rather than saving the lives of the living, autopsies had to be done on the dead? Or that perhaps the memory of doctors over 80 who have returned to service has been lost because, starting with doctors, the medical staff had been knocked out by the virus which had primarily affected doctors and para-doctors? Explaining all this is unfortunately useless, precisely because the antivax has an irrational denial answer ready for anything, while the pseudo-Catholic antivax even more and even worse. The one on the one hand, the others on the other hand, they connect to their trusted conspiracy sites and blogs and drink anything and everything like geese that have been given grains of salt in food.

To these subjects impossible to scratch in their radical opinions, I have tried to recount certain sad experiences I had as a priest? Yup, I did it, narrating, for example, that he entered an intensive care unit with all the highest cautions because he was a doctor friend, 52 years of age, was at high risk of mortality. And as a desire, knowing that he is close to death, he asked about me. His colleagues made an exception, for this little man both the place and above all the name of the hospital. I didn't really go inside, but covered in overalls, with mask, gloves and eye visor, I saw him half a meter beyond the glass. I told this episode to some antivax who thrives on conspiracies and who jokes about “pandemenza” of Covid-19? Have I ever advised them to view the Official site of the Ministry of Health or that of Medicines Agency? Of course yes, but for the antivax the only truths lie in the dangerous declarations of that scoundrel of Stefano Montanari and of that Italian shame of Antonio Pappalardo, who finished from his post as a retired general of the Carabinieri sent to trial for insulting the Head of State. So that Christianity had the success it enjoyed starting from the fourth century thanks to the Emperor Constantine, who in his own way was largely its creator, not just the advocate for purely political interests. In the face of this and more, because I am theologian and many of my confreres who are theological priests, we never had a problem having these exchanges? On the contrary, almost always mutual esteem and also beautiful human friendships between very different people were born, even if some believe and others deny your belief. Everything happened and continued to happen for the simple fact that on both sides there has never been a closed, obtuse and narrow-minded fundamentalist attitude. And this is called logic, it's called common sense, that almost absent in ideological antivaxes and unfortunately also in an increasingly consistent slice of the population.

If you cannot reason with antivaxes, then how can you interact with them, scientifically established that the only system to reduce damage from Covid-19 is the vaccination of the entire population, whatever they may say? The problem is legal as far as the secular state is concerned, moral regarding our Catholic faith.

Let's start with the secular state: we have seen groups of exalted antivaxes shouting «freedom, freedom!»On the streets to claim their" right "to say no to the vaccine. The first question that needs to be asked is the following: for these people, what is freedom? Let's proceed with the examples: by chance we want to indict a couple who decides to have sexual intercourse on a crowded beach or on the bench in a public place for lewd acts in a public place? They do it because they love each other and for this reason they freely decide to make love, it is their right to love each other and make love, or not? How can it exist in the 2021 a system so retrograde and puritanical that it dares to call “obscene acts” the freedom that two people have to love each other? So it is easy to say: the article 527 of the Criminal Code it should not simply be decriminalized, but just abolished as a figure of crime. Obviously, in our speech, neither abortion nor euthanasia are in question, but health understood as a collective interest. The article 32 of the Constitution of the Italian Republic is very clear:

In a pandemic situation, people can harm the protection of the health of the community because for their purely irrational reasons, anti-scientific and ideological reject vaccination? The same article 32 however, he continues to specify:

Our Constitution is clear without misunderstanding in indicating that health is a collective good, but that at the same time no one can be forced to a specific health treatment, except in accordance with the law. They are both two fixed and rigid points. And this is precisely the problem: it must be established clearly and precisely that those who refuse vaccination for their purely irrational reasons, anti-scientific and ideological, or even for forms of rooted and invincible ignorance, they can actually cause serious damage to the entire community. However, everything must be proved in a very rigorous way in the relationship of cause and effect, enough to be able to invoke the obligation by virtue of the fact that no liberal country, democratic and truly civil has never conceded that the misunderstood subjective idea of ​​"freedom" can cause serious damage to the entire community. Personally - but my thinking, of course, it is an opinion that leaves the time it finds -, I believe that in the current situation all the legal elements could be used to impose the mandatory vaccination. As I repeat, however, everything must be clarified in the point of law in the most rigorous way possible, thus avoiding giving life, if not, to a dangerous precedent under which the permanence of a terminally ill patient or the birth of a child with Down syndrome can be declared unhealthy tomorrow.

Using the good one as an example paterfamilias, we could say that the State is a bit like a parent who, having the duty to protect a very large family, cannot in any way allow some to cause serious harm to all the others. Certainly the State cannot act like that weak and spineless father who tries in every way to persuade an unreasonable and rebellious son not to harm others with a pained smile on his face., especially when this does not consider this a damage but rather the exercise of his free right. One can therefore warn him, twice, but at the third he will exercise his power in a coercive way and will force him to do what he must do in order not to harm everyone else.

In a state like ours, mostly formed by politicians hungry for votes like voracious bulimics, ready to forget the Antonio Gramsci, the Palmiro Togliatti and the Enrico Berlinguer who have characterized their glorious past as the Italian Left, to bow to a poor illiterate like that certain Influence Lombard which moves twelve million followers. With, on the other side, a so-called populist Right that measures the menstrual temperature in the uterus of the square to try to understand how to please it and thus increase the electoral consensus in the future, someone sees a state on the horizon that can act with the wisdom of the good paterfamilias?

I am truly amazed by our President of the Republic and of all the politicians who invite the novax fringes to a sense of responsibility, because it would be like asking a blind person to read the road signs or a deaf person to appreciate the voice of soprano Maria Callas. This is why I do not understand why the highest office of the state and politicians with common sense waste time uselessly through these exhortations that, as they say, they can have the only effect of making these fringes of people even more irrational. In my humble opinion, decisive legislative action is needed. It is not enough to say that without green pass it will not be possible to enter public places, therefore be subjected to a whole series of limitations. More is needed: it is necessary to establish with a precise and decisive decree law that people opposed to vaccination for ideological-irrational reasons, if they contract the virus in a severe form, they will have to pay all health costs from the first to the last, even because, a sick person admitted to intensive care, it costs the national community of public taxpayers 2.000 euro per day of hospitalization. Such a decision would also be useful to avoid other possible and not at all improbable social injustices, for example that a person to whom it is not possible to administer the vaccine due to his serious and complex diseases, is infected with the antivax which is then hospitalized in intensive care at the expense of the community, while for the patient who could not be given the vaccine there will be no place for hospitalization. Antivax will come out of intensive care and will continue to talk about conspiracies of the strong powers, if anything it will also denounce the doctors who with the excuse of “pandemenza” caused damage to his internal organs, while the patient who could not be given the vaccine will die, because the antivax has stolen his place in intensive care.
