Rightly or wrongly the figure of the Seraphic Father lends itself - and has always lent itself over time - to guaranteeing a support to all those who live a privileged and loving relationship with nature and animals.

However, allow me to clarify: defining Saint Francis as the patron saint and friend of animals is a bit simplistic, and this is because there is a risk of leading to facile contemporary ideologies with the sole result of emptying not only the Franciscan vision of Creation of its authentic meaning but the Franciscan theology itself which contemplates the masterpiece of the Trinity in Creation.

St. Francis, in his love for all Creation, he sees and contemplates first of all the Creator God and with him the sweet person of the Son of God, the Word of the Father through whom - as the blessed apostle John writes in his Prologue - "everything was made through Him, and without Him nothing of all that exists was made" (cf. GV 1,3). For this reason, nothing of what the Creator has done and accomplished in Creation through the Word can be without praise, of gratitude, of joy and thanksgiving, as it is itself directed towards the definitive redemption that the Son of God brought about with his passion, Death and Resurrection. We can affirm with the hope of faith that for God every created reality is a redeemed reality that deserves and reaches salvation in Jesus Christ the Savior. The same Creation that in the present moment still groans and suffers from the pangs of childbirth (cf. RM 8,22) lives its daily transformation in the work of Christ who acts in the fulfillment of his Kingdom and in that effective cooperation with man.

Given this theological vision of Creation, we understand how for Saint Francis everything becomes an opportunity to give thanks - a foretaste of the Eucharist - if we look at it with living faith: «for brother alone, for sora moon and the stars, by brother the wind and by the air and the cloud and the clear and sunny weather, for now water, for brother fire, for our sister mother earth» (cf. Canticle of the Creatures).

Creation for the Seraphic Father, while still moaning and suffering from the pangs and pains of childbirth (cf. Rom 8,22) in that eschatological becoming of definitive redemption, he is still a brother to love, respect and guard (cf. GN 2,15), a traveling companion for the man seeking God.

This little Franciscan theological introduction it serves as an intuition to understand how love towards our animal companions becomes a concrete opportunity to find God. In this regard, I would like to quote an episode narrated in the Vita Prima by Tommaso da Celano (FF. n. 457) which tells of a day in which Saint Francis together with Brother Paul came across a man carrying two little lambs on his shoulders, to sell them at the market. Taken by pity, the Seraphic Father, knowing that the animals would be sold and eaten, he gave the man his cloak by exchanging it for the two little lambs and effectively carrying out a redemptive and salvific gesture, which we can only read as the restitution of that salvation and redemption that Christ, spotless lamb, he worked with man and with the Poor Man of Assisi himself.

Saint Francis with a gaze full of God he is capable of seeing in animals some attribute and characteristic that calls him and brings him closer to God, but we ourselves with our four-legged friends can equally read God's work towards us and find relief in this, tenderness, joy and salvation.

Such a road finds concrete application in the use of animals as real therapy in those who are going through particular suffering, crises or loneliness or who find themselves living in a condition of chronic or terminal illness.

It's not wrong in this regard, talk about therapy also within a faith approach, because Jesus Christ is the Father's therapist, the celestial doctor who heals our infirmities and this cure also passes through the work of Creation and the creatures that inhabit it.

It's from 1964 that we are talking about the so-called Pet-Therapy — therapy through animals — a term coined by the child psychiatrist Boris M. Levinson and which today has taken on the broader name of Animal Assisted Intervention (IAA). The benefits that a pet can bring to a sick child or a lonely elderly person are undoubted and certified. Tenderness, the affectionateness and warmth of a dog or kitten snuggling in your lap can open up truly unexpected responses and astonishing neuropsychic reactions when, for example, you live with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's or with the deterioration of cognitive functions, like memory, thought and language.

The Pet-Therapy it needs expert operators and get ready but also a Pet-Therapy more housewife with the right common sense, responsibility and vigilance can bring various benefits such as stress reduction, increased movement and coordination, the strengthening of empathy and the ability to care, the increase in social skills which lead to a slow and progressive exodus from loneliness and depression as well as the person's reactivity.

I am aware of episodes that affected the lives of priests of the diocesan clergy who in their solitude were recovered by their pet from imminent depressive syndromes, even serious ones. It seems like a small thing, but return home in the evening, after a whole day of ministerial effort, in which there is no shortage of joys, pain and misunderstandings and finding yourself faced with a furry that gives you attention, it can truly constitute a healthy therapy that cannot be taken for granted.

Because of this, and also for other reasons which would take a long time to describe here, who in our Provincial Infirmary of the Sardinian Capuchin Friars - of which I am the new manager - has decided to get a puppy dog, a lively Jack Russell of one and a half months old, who is slowly conquering our elderly brothers with his exuberance. Effectively, in the two weeks of living with our Teo - as we called him - I see greater reactivity and responsiveness in our elderly friars. And he is there with us, when we accompany the elderly to bed in the evening; and there with us in the refectory when we eat and he jumps around nibbling some sandals; he is there with us in the chapel when we pray; in short, this puppy manages to keep us awake and responsive, even doing some mischief that the gray-haired age of our friars would perhaps sometimes like to avoid but which overall becomes a therapeutic goad that encourages us to live and open up some smiles again, and all this to the praise of God and his servant Francis.

Rightly or wrongly, the figure of the Seraphic Father lends itself — and has always lent itself, throughout the centuries — to offering support to all those who share a privileged and loving relationship with nature and with animals. Allow me, however, a clarification: to define Saint Francis as the patron and friend of animals is somewhat reductive, since doing so risks leading to facile contemporary ideologisations, with the sole result of emptying not only the Franciscan vision of Creation of its authentic meaning, but the very Franciscan theology that contemplates in Creation the masterpiece of the Trinity.

Saint Francis, in his love for the whole of Creation, sees and contemplates first of all God the Creator, and with him the most sweet person of the Son of God, the Word of the Father through whom — as the blessed apostle John writes in his Prologue — “All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be.” (cf. Jn 1:3). For this reason, nothing that the Creator has made and accomplished in Creation through the Word can be devoid of praise, gratitude, joy and thanksgiving, since it is itself directed towards the definitive redemption that the Son of God accomplished through his passion, death and resurrection. We can affirm, in the hope of faith, that for God every created reality is a redeemed reality that merits and attains salvation in Jesus Christ the Saviour. The very Creation which, at the present moment, still groans and suffers the pains of childbirth (cf. Rom 8:22) lives out its daily transformation in the work of Christ, who acts in the fulfilment of his Kingdom and in that effective cooperation with man.

Given this theological vision of Creation, we understand how for Saint Francis everything becomes an occasion to give thanks — a foretaste of the Eucharist — when looked upon with living faith: “for Brother Sun, for Sister Moon and the stars, for Brother Wind and for the air, cloudy and serene, and every kind of weather, for Sister Water, for Brother Fire, for our Sister Mother Earth” (cf. Canticle of the Creatures).

For the Seraphic Father, Creation, though still groaning and suffering the pains and sufferings of childbirth (cf. Rom 8:22) in that eschatological becoming of definitive redemption, nonetheless remains a brother to be loved, respected and cared for (cf. Gen 2:15), a travelling companion for man in his search for God.

This brief Franciscan theological introduction serves as an intuition to help us understand how love for our animal companions becomes a fitting occasion for finding God. In this regard, I wish to cite an episode recounted in the Life Before by Thomas of Celano (FF no. 457), which tells of a day when Saint Francis, together with Brother Paul, came across a man carrying two lambs on his shoulders to sell at market. Moved with pity, the Seraphic Father, knowing that the animals would be sold and eaten, gave the man his cloak in exchange for the two lambs, thereby accomplishing a redemptive and salvific gesture — one which we cannot help but read as a restitution of that salvation and redemption which Christ, the spotless lamb, wrought for man and for the Poor Man of Assisi himself.

Saint Francis, with his gaze full of God, was able to perceive in animals certain attributes and characteristics that recalled and drew him closer to God; yet we too, with our four-legged friends, can likewise read God’s work towards us and find in this relief, tenderness, joy and salvation.

This path finds concrete application in the use of animals as a genuine therapy for those who are going through particular sufferings, crises or periods of solitude, or who find themselves living with a chronic or terminal illness.

It is not wrong, in this regard, to speak of therapy even within an approach of faith, for Jesus Christ is the Father’s therapist, the heavenly physician who heals our infirmities, and such healing passes also through the work of Creation and the creatures that inhabit it.

It is since 1964 that we speak of so-called Pet Therapy — therapy through animals — a term coined by the child psychiatrist Boris M. Levinson, which today has taken on the broader designation of Animal-Assisted Intervention (AAI). The benefits that a companion animal can bring to a sick child or a lonely elderly person are undisputed and well documented. The tenderness, affection and warmth of a puppy or kitten curling up in one’s lap can open the way to truly unexpected responses and astonishing neuropsychiatric reactions, for instance in those living with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or with the deterioration of cognitive functions such as memory, thought and language.

Pet Therapy needs expert and trained practitioners, but even a more homely form of Pet Therapy, exercised with the right common sense, responsibility and vigilance, can bring various benefits, such as reduced stress, increased movement and coordination, enhanced empathy and capacity for care-giving, and greater social skills that lead to a slow and gradual departure from loneliness and depression, as well as improved responsiveness in the person.

I am aware of cases involving diocesan priests who, in their solitude, were rescued by their pet from the onset of depressive syndromes, even severe ones. It may seem a small thing, but coming home in the evening, after a whole day of ministerial toil in which joys, sorrows and misunderstandings are never lacking, and finding a furry little companion waiting to give you attention, can truly constitute a wholesome therapy that should not be taken for granted.

For this reason, and also for other reasons too long to describe here, our Provincial Infirmary of the Sardinian Capuchin Friars — of which I am the new superior — decided to take in a puppy, a lively month-and-a-half-old Jack Russell, who is little by little winning over our elderly confreres with his exuberance. Indeed, in the two weeks of living alongside our Teo — as we have named him — I see in our elderly friars greater responsiveness and engagement. And he is there with us in the evening, when we accompany the elderly to bed; there with us in the refectory when we eat, as he bounds about nibbling at a sandal or two; there with us in the chapel when we pray. In short, this puppy manages to keep us awake and responsive, even through the odd mischief that the venerable age of our friars might sometimes wish to avoid, but which, on the whole, becomes a therapeutic spur that encourages us to live and to open up once more to a smile — and all this to the praise of God and of his servant Francis.

Rightly or wrongly, The figure of the Seraphic Father lends itself—and has always lent itself over time—to offering support to all those who live a privileged and loving relationship with nature and animals.. allow me, however, a precision: Defining Saint Francis as the patron and friend of animals is somewhat reductive., because there is a risk of leading to easy contemporary ideologizations, with the sole result of emptying not only the Franciscan vision of Creation of its authentic meaning, but the same Franciscan theology that contemplates in Creation the masterpiece of the Trinity.

San Francisco, in his love towards all Creation, go and contemplate above all God the Creator, and with him the sweetest person of the Son of God, the Word of the Father through whom—as the blessed apostle John writes in his Prologue—“Through him all things were made.”, and without him nothing was done that has been done." (cf. Jn 1,3). For this reason, Nothing that the Creator has made and accomplished in Creation through the Word can lack praise., gratitude, joy and thanksgiving, as it is oriented towards the definitive redemption that the Son of God wrought with his passion, death and resurrection. We can affirm, with the hope of faith, that for God every created reality is a redeemed reality that deserves and achieves salvation in Jesus Christ Savior. The same Creation that at the present moment still groans and suffers labor pains (cf. Rom 8,22) live your daily transformation in the work of Christ, who acts in the fulfillment of his Kingdom and in that effective cooperation with man.

Establishing this theological vision of Creation, We understand how for Saint Francis everything becomes an occasion to give thanks—an anticipation of the Eucharist—if we look at it with living faith.: «by brother sun, for sister moon and stars, for brother wind and for air, cloudy and serene, and all the time, by sister water, by brother fire, for our sister mother earth (cf. Song of the Creatures).

The Creation, for the Seraphic Father, although she still moans and suffers the pains and sufferings of childbirth (cf. Rom 8,22) in that eschatological future of definitive redemption, He is still a brother who must be loved., respect and guard (cf. GN 2,15), a companion on the road for the man seeking God.

This brief Franciscan theological introduction It serves as an intuition to understand how love for our animal companions becomes a favorable occasion to find God.. I wish to quote in this regard an episode narrated in the Life Before by Thomas of Celano (FF n. 457), in which it is said that, one day, San Francisco, together with brother Pablo, They met a man carrying two lambs on his shoulders to sell in the market.. San Francisco, with eyes full of God, is able to perceive in animals some attribute and characteristic that refers him and brings him closer to God, but also us, with our four-legged friends, we can also read the work of God towards us and find relief in it, tenderness, joy and salvation.

This way It finds its concrete application in the use of animals as true therapy for those who are going through suffering., particular crises or loneliness, or are experiencing a chronic or terminal illness condition.

It doesn't hurt, in this regard, talk about therapy also within a faith approach, because Jesus Christ is the therapist of the Father, the heavenly doctor who heals our diseases, and this cure also goes through the work of Creation and the creatures that inhabit it..

From 1964 we talk about the call Pet Therapy — therapy through animals —, term coined by child psychiatrist Boris M. Levinson and which today has adopted the broader name of Animal Assisted Intervention (IAA). The benefits that a pet can bring to a sick child or a lonely elderly person are undoubted and certified.. The tenderness, The affection and warmth of a puppy or kitten snuggling on your lap can open the way to truly unexpected responses and astonishing neuropsychic reactions., For example, when living with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's or deterioration of cognitive functions, like memory, thought and language.

The Pet Therapy requires expert and prepared operators, but even one Pet Therapy more homemade, with common sense, proper accountability and oversight, can provide various benefits, like stress reduction, increased movement and coordination, strengthening empathy and caring capacity, and the increase in socialization capacities that lead to a slow and progressive abandonment of loneliness and depression, as well as greater reactivity of the person.

I have knowledge of cases that have affected the lives of priests of the diocesan clergy who, in his loneliness, were recovered by their pet from the imminence of depressive syndromes, even serious. It may seem like a small thing, but come home at night, after a whole day of ministerial fatigue in which there is no shortage of joys, pains and misunderstandings, and find yourself before a little furry that gives you attention, can truly constitute a healthy therapy that is not inconsiderable.

For this, and also for other reasons which would be long to describe here, In our Provincial Infirmary of the Sardinian Capuchin Friars — of which I am the new person in charge — it was decided to welcome a dog puppy, a lively month and a half old Jack Russell, that little by little is conquering our elderly brothers with its exuberance. On Christmas Day 1886 the young writer and poet, agnostic at the time, Paul Claudel, pass through the portal of Our Lady from Paris and the song of the Magnificat, evangelical text of the liturgy of Vespers.

He later confessed that he emerged from that experience transformed, destined to become the singer of the Christian faith known to all; many know his drama: Announcement made to Mary. Years after, In the 1913, will narrate:

«On that day I believed with such strength of adhesion, with such an elevation of my entire being, with such a strong belief, with such certainty, with such an absence of doubt that later nor the books, nor the reasoning, nor could the fate of a troubled life shake my faith".

The 15 August of each year, the calendar commemorates the solemnity of the assumption into heaven of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of the Lord, despite the widespread secularized denomination of "Ferragosto". Well, that one enters a solemn cathedral like Our Lady or in a small chapel lost in the mountains, each one, on this day, will hear that song of the Magnificat which distinguishes the Holy Mass of this Solemnity. Here is the passage reported by the evangelist Luke.

«In those days Mary got up and went quickly towards the mountainous region, in a city of Judah. Entry into the house of Zaccarìa, greeted Elizabeth. As soon as Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leapt in her womb. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed in a loud voice: “Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb! To what do I owe the mother of my Lord to come to me? there, as soon as your greeting reached my ears, the baby leapt for joy in my womb. And blessed is she who believed in the fulfillment of what the Lord told her”. Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God, my savior, because he looked at the humility of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed. The Almighty has done great things for me and Holy is his name; his mercy to those who fear him from generation to generation. He explained the power of his arm, he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; he has overthrown the mighty from their thrones, he raised up the humble; he has filled the hungry with good things, he sent the rich away empty-handed. He helped Israel, his servant, remembering his mercy, as he had told our fathers, for Abraham and his descendants, forever”. Maria stayed with her about three months, then he returned to his home" (LC 1,39-56).

Maria, pregnant with Jesus, while he is visiting his relative Elizabeth, pregnant in turn with John the Baptist, intones this extraordinarily long hymn that Luke reports. It is the only time that the words of the Mother of Christ expand to the point of understanding well 102 words in Greek, including articles, pronouns and particles. The other times, only five in total, Mary's sentences reported in the Gospels are short and almost halting, as in Cana during the wedding in which his Son also participates: «They have no more wine» and «Whatever I tell you, do it" (GV 2, 3). Let's follow, At that time, the poetic flow of this Marian psalmody woven onto a palimpsest of biblical allusions.

Ideally the singing is for soloist and choir. The first movement is intoned by Maria's "I".: «My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God, my savior, because he looked at the humility of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed. The Almighty has done great things for me." (LC 1,49). Origen asks (III):

«What did he have, the mother of the Lord, humble and low, she who carried the Son of God in her womb? Saying: “She looked at the humility of her handmaid”, it's as if he were saying: he looked upon the righteousness of his handmaiden, he looked at his temperance, he looked at his strength and his wisdom" (Origene, Homilies on Luke).

In the second movement of the hymn the voice of a choir enters into which Mary's voice joins, just like a soprano who lets her singing emerge. It is the choir of Christians, heirs of those "poor" of the Old Testament, the grapes (Anawim), those who are stooped, not only under the oppression of the powerful, but also in the humility of adoration towards God, thus overcoming the arrogance of the proud. These, socially poor, but above all faithful and just, they celebrate, ideally uniting with the voice of Mary, the particular divine choices that differ from worldly logic, privileging not the strong or the powerful, but the last and the marginalized; thus overturning historical hierarchies. The Evangelista Luca, using the Greek aorist tense called «gnomic», because it refers to experiences acquired beyond their temporal character, describes through seven verbs, a number that indicates fullness, the singular divine choices:

«He explained the power of his arm, / he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts, / he has overthrown the mighty from their thrones, / he raised up the humble, / he has filled the hungry with good things, / he sent the rich away empty-handed, / he has helped his servant Israel" (LC 1,51-54).

It is a constant logic of God which we also find on the lips of Jesus: «So the last will be first and the first, last" (Mt 20,16) and “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted" (LC 14, 11).

The charm of Mary's words, In the Magnificat, it has been imprinted in Christian spirituality ever since, informing the lives of many saints and has given rise to a myriad of comments of all kinds and many works of art, both pictorial, how musical. Even the heresiarch Martin Luther, that the Blessed Virgin was always very devoted - which most of the Catholic faithful, But also many scholars ignore -, In the 1521 he composed an intense little book entitled The Magnificat translated into German and commented.

This beautiful song of Magnificat it is placed by the Liturgy as the setting of the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary which is celebrated everywhere, in the East, as in the Christian West. Since the Dormition-Assumption of Mary is a sign of the ultimate realities, of what must happen in a future that is not so much chronological but rather meaningful, a sign of the fullness that our limits yearn for: in her we sense the glorification that awaits the entire cosmos at the end of time, when "God will be all in all" (1Color 15,28) and in everything. She, the Vergine Maria, it is the portion of humanity already redeemed, figure of that promised land to which we are called, strip of earth transplanted into the sky. A hymn of the Serbian Orthodox Church sings Mary as "land of heaven", earth now in God forever, anticipation of our common destiny.

I would like to conclude with the words of a famous prayer with which Saint Francis greets Mary today remembered as Assumption into heaven:

«Hail Madam, Santa Regina, holy parent of God, Maria, that you are a virgin made Church / and elected by the most holy heavenly Father, who consecrated you together with his most holy beloved Son and with the Holy Spirit Paraclete; / you in whom there was and is every fullness of grace and every good. / Ave, his palace, ave, his tabernacle, ave, your home. / Ave, his clothing, ave, his handmaiden, ave, his Mother. / And I greet you all, holy virtues, that by grace and illumination of the Holy Spirit you are infused into the hearts of the faithful, because they are unfaithful / make them faithful to God" (FF 259-260).

Death of an elderly priest

15 August 2026/in Actuality/by father ariel

IN THE DEATH OF A SENIOR PRIEST

«Ongoing formation must also concern those priests who due to their advanced age are referred to as elders and who in some Churches are the largest part of the presbyterate. This must give them gratitude for the faithful service they have reserved for Christ and the Church and concrete solidarity for their condition".

The news of the discovery in his rectory (who) of the lifeless body of a priest takes us by surprise and fills us with dismay at the circumstances.

In fact, it seems to have been a voluntary gesture, still in the assessment and definition phase. The priest was called Lino Zatelli, of years 75, per 24 year old, from the 2001, parish priest of the Clarina community (Trento), but also chaplain of the State Police and organizer of multiple pilgrimages.

The condolences for his passing were unanimous and it came from all the representatives of the communities where Don Lino lived, also because he left a positive testimony everywhere. But the newspapers also speak of a transfer of the parish which should have taken place next November and which, always according to what the newspapers report, it would have been poorly digested by the priest who expressed himself thus when giving the news: «We will stay together until November, we don't pull the oars on the boat, much less me. I never asked to leave, nor from Vallarsa, right from Meano, nor from here. These 24 years cannot be forgotten" (who).

His own parishioners with other admirers they had contested the change of parish, even launching an online petition that reached hundreds of signatures, so long as, according to the promoters of the initiative, Don Lino couldn't understand the reason for the transfer, which was supposed to happen in the fall. In front of this, as with other painful circumstances, the best path is that of silence and prayer, in this case of suffrage for the soul of this priest. But, if we are allowed, we just add a few quiet words and a short testimony.

The Code of Canon Law all no 538 and paragraph 3 so it goes:

«I turned seventy-five years old, the parish priest is invited to present his resignation from office to the diocesan bishop, who, considering every circumstance of person and place, decide whether to accept it or defer it; the diocesan Bishop must adequately provide for the support and housing of the renouncer, awaited the regulations issued by the Episcopal Conference".

Don Lino had precisely 75 year old and was about to be transferred to another position, perhaps less burdensome than the previous one, we do not know, but still a pastoral role. An event that happens more and more frequently due to the lack of priests, therefore even elderly priests are called to remain in the breach, how do you say, for the good of the faithful, even just to carry out essential tasks such as administering the sacraments and of course, among these, the celebration of the Eucharist, often in so-called pastoral units or areas. And it was precisely to one of these that he was about to be transferred.

The Supreme Pontiff Francis in September of 2021 he wrote that elderly priests are not «just an object of assistance, but active protagonists of the community" because they are "bearers of dreams full of memory and therefore very important for the young generations". From them, added the Pontiff in the letter written for the Fraternity Day of the Lombard clergy: «the sap comes to flourish in Christian life and ministry». The Pontiff concluded: «I ask you, please, to pray for me who am a little old and a little sick but not too much!». «You are living a season, old age, which is not a disease, but a privilege", the privilege of "resembling Jesus who suffers" (who).

For further information you can also read the «Directory for the ministry and vision of priests» issued under Benedict XVI in 2013, which refers to the Pastores dabo vobis of the Holy Pontiff John Paul II, the 1992, which at no 77 so it goes:

«Ongoing formation must also concern those priests who due to their advanced age are referred to as elders and who in some Churches are the largest part of the presbyterate. This must give them gratitude for the faithful service they have reserved for Christ and the Church and concrete solidarity for their condition".

Words are always important and comforting, but perhaps some older priests, after many years of ministry they also need concrete gestures of closeness, of understanding their difficulties and listening to their wishes, even if it was not to be transferred, after having served one or more communities for a long time and where you are still well-liked and respected. Of course, each case is different, Precisely for this reason, especially towards the most fragile, that personal care is needed, which sometimes borders on patience, but which always takes into account personal and priestly dignity, especially when dealing with someone who has spent his entire life for the church, sometimes in a dark and hidden way, doing good.

Without judging, I therefore allow myself to report a first-hand testimony. An old priest from a Tuscan diocese past the age of eighty, 37 of which lived in the service of the same parish, asks his Bishop to be able to withdraw. The prelate understands, but he continually sends the elderly priest back, who to be honest still shows a good temper and enviable ability to resist. Until he just can't take it anymore and the Bishop finds himself forced to accept the resignation. The old priest moves to a facility for the elderly not far from his old parish. What do lay people do about this, in agreement with the new parish priest who, among other things, finds himself managing his own parish and also that of the now former parish priest and having to celebrate four Holy Masses every Sunday? They draw up a list of volunteers who go to pick up the elderly priest every Sunday and take him back to his old parish where he can celebrate the afternoon Eucharist, meeting again the people he knew and all those who had shared the joys and sorrows of the pastoral ministry with him. You can imagine what happened after Mass? How many greetings, how much advice and smiles he could still distribute? And because he was an intelligent person, he did not judge the changes brought about by the new parish priest, happy to still enjoy his parish with that freedom given by being exempt from the obligation of service.

When after a few years he suffered a stroke and transferred to a facility that takes care of non-self-sufficient elderly people, the laity continued every Sunday, in turn, to go and see him. Of course, the family took care of the essential things, the nephew, but it was never abandoned, not even a Sunday. When the younger parish priest who had replaced him went to visit him once, he saw him arrive in a wheelchair pushed by a healthcare worker. In his hand he held a cigarette. To the stupid question from the younger priest about his resumption of an ancient vice that he had abandoned many years ago, here's how the old man replied: «What do you want me to have a cigarette every now and then, that kills me?». And they both smiled.

When he died and his funeral was celebrated in his old parish with the Archbishop, much of the presbytery, family members and a large crowd of people. His remains still rest in the small church in the cemetery not far from that parish where he had officiated for more than 37 year old.

It's just an example, a fact that is neither newsworthy, nor does it argue in favor of a general rule of conduct. He just wants to tell you that it is possible to take care of our elderly, considering an old priest as one of the family, or turn around, still part of a community, even if he left her. So that what the Scripture says is true and credible:

«love each other intensely, from the heart, each other, regenerated not from a corruptible but an incorruptible seed, through the living and everlasting word of God." (1PT 1,22).

PATTI SMITH, THE HOLY FATHER AND THE SHORT MEMORY OF THE CATHOLICISM

The 31 last July the Supreme Pontiff Leo XIV received Patti Smith — the “priestess of rock” — in a private audience, singer-songwriter and poet, about to turn eighty next December — in a forty-minute meeting in the Library of the Apostolic Palace.

Some sites that improperly define themselves as traditionalist, in Italy and abroad they were immediately outraged, remembering that the artist would be in favor of abortion.

We do not intend to enter into controversy with these environments: it would be a sterile battle, as well as lost from the start. We limit ourselves to refreshing the short memory of those who forget, as in Italy, the law that legalized in 1978 the voluntary termination of pregnancy was not signed by Patti Smith, but by the President of the Republic Giovanni Leone, Christian Democrat, countersigned by the Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti, by the Minister of Health Tina Anselmi, by the Keeper of the Seals Francesco Bonifacio and by the ministers Tommaso Morlino and Filippo Maria Pandolfi. Everyone, without exception, Christian Democrats and very Catholics, accustomed to spending their lives "kissing the piles" of holy water. And all these devotees hid behind the finger of the institutional act due.

It hits, But, an asymmetry: the Church has always firmly reiterated excommunication lat the same time (can. 1397 §2) for those who procure an actual abortion. John Paul II, in the encyclical Gospel of Life (NN. 73-74), it went beyond the single case, affirming the serious moral responsibility of those who, with your vote, contributes to promulgating laws that allow and favor abortion, a burden of conscience which for a professing Catholic should not be less serious just because it does not translate into an automatic canonical sanction. You might ask then, without any irreverence, What voice did this moral responsibility ever have for the army of very Catholic Christian Democrats who wrote and signed that law?, while in the sacred palaces there was indignation in one-way traffic: maximum indignation towards the radicals of Marco Pannella and Emma Bonino who had promoted the referendum for the legalization of abortion, but not towards those who promulgated that law, as they had to submit to a due act, poor holy victims!

Regarding the due act it would be enough to remember how things went differently in Belgium. King Baldwin I, Catholic seriously, in order not to sign the law except in 1990 decriminalized abortion, invoked the article 82 of the Constitution and temporarily abdicated. From the 3 al 5 April of that year the government exercised royal powers in his place, he promulgated the law and Parliament reinstated him on the throne just thirty-six hours later. The law passed anyway, but not from his hand. An extraordinary figure, that of the Belgian sovereign, for whom the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints has started the beatification process on 21 December 2024, after the announcement made by Pope Francis during his trip to Belgium (cf.. Vatican News).

This is the difference between those who really believe in what they profess and who, while professing it in words, he adapts with ease to the conveniences of power. As for the Supreme Pontiffs, it is good to remember that they have always received everyone, including bloodthirsty dictators and autocrats of all persuasions. Remember, among many, the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, received both by John Paul II (Khatami, In the 1999) both by Francesco (Spiritual, In the 2016). And they did well, because receiving someone does not mean sharing their thoughts or politics, if anything it means believing that no meeting is ever completely useless, at least for whom, like us, he believes in the graceful action of the three theological virtues: faith, hope, charity (1Color 13,13). Anyone today who is scandalized by a forty-minute audience granted to a very talented artist should perhaps be indignant, with more knowledge of the facts, looking closer to home and further back in time.

Abortion is such a serious tragedy and crime that using them for similar polemical squabbles is offensive first and foremost towards the creatures killed every day. The Holy Father Francis himself expressed it bluntly, in the general audience of 10 October 2018, with a severity that not even John Paul II dared reach:

«I ask you: it is right to "take out" a human life to solve a problem? It's okay to hire a hitman to solve a problem? Can not be done, it is not right to "kill" a human being, albeit small, to solve a problem. It's like hiring a hitman to solve a problem". (cf.. who).

On this, not on a Vatican audience, those who say they really care about life should focus: the drama of hitmen hired every day to kill innocent angels. And in Italy, let's remember it again at the end because it is history: the hand of the assassins was armed by the very Catholic Christian Democrats, everyone lined up to kiss the holy water stacks the day after the law on the legalization of hitmen was passed.

Francesco Guccini is dead but God is not

7 August 2026/in Actuality/by father ariel

FRANCESCO GUCCINI IS DEAD BUT GOD NO

Using "God is dead" as a premise and "God rises again in what we want" as a solution simultaneously betrays two thoughts that both deserve greater respect: traditional Friedrich Nietzsche, reducing his tragic diagnosis to a lyrical pretext; and betrays the Christian theology of the Resurrection, reducing it to a collective inspiration of good intentions.

Given that the topic could lend itself to easy misunderstandings and sterile controversies, it is appropriate to clarify things immediately: the target of these lines is not Francesco Guccini, passed away today in Pavana, fraction of Sambuca Pistoiese.

© Image created with AI based on a project by the editorial staff of the magazine L'Isola di Patmos

One can not appreciate the thought of this singer-songwriter — and who writes, in truth, he never shared it - even though he unreservedly recognized his talent and the place he deserves in the history of Italian songwriting. It's not him, today, the problem, but an article appeared on Future, newspaper of the Italian Episcopal Conference, the signature of Umberto Folena (see article who), who in commemorating the musician writes a sentence that would deserve much more caution from those who publish in the newspaper of the Bishops of Italy. Quoting the famous song God is dead (cf.. text who), this colleague observes that in the text in question «God is no longer at the center of man's thoughts […] but God rises again: “In what we believe, in what we want, in the world we will make”». And he adds, of his own, that it is «a hope that is neither vague nor vain, but supported by a faith". Statement, this, which is not a neutral paraphrase at all: it is an approval.

Like this, directly from the columns of Future, we ignore that the Resurrection is not a human project. Let's try to be surgical, because the material requires it: the Resurrection of Christ, in the Catholic faith, it is not an event that depends on our belief, by our will, or from the world we will build. It's exactly the opposite: it is a historical-salvific fact that precedes faith and establishes it, not that it depends on it. Christ was resurrected on the third day, really and physically, regardless of who believed it and who didn't. Incredulous and terrified, the apostles themselves had to surrender to the evidence of an empty tomb and a living Lord (cf.. LC 24,36-43), not the other way around.

«The formula cited by Umberto Folena — «in what we believe, in what we want, in the world we will make" — overturns this logic: makes the Resurrection a projection of the human will, an immanent project, something that happens within history and at the hands of man. It is theology reversed: not God who saves man, but the man who, believing and wanting intensely enough, “rises up” God within his own collective project. In other words: if the Resurrection really depended on what we believe, we want or build, At that time “It gave” it would merely become the name we give to our best collective intentions, that is, something that exists as long as we continue to want it and which would disappear if we stopped believing in it or committing ourselves. It is the exact opposite of the Christian faith, for which Christ was truly resurrected, Once for all, regardless of who knew it, believed it or wanted it, as demonstrated precisely by the initial disbelief of the apostles in the face of the fait accompli (cf.. LC 24,11). And all this, which from a theological point of view is an authentic aberration of the entire mystery of salvation, it certainly cannot be called "a hope supported by a faith", because without a line of distinction, without a single reference to the Creed, it is an operation that any newspaper could also afford, the official organ of the Bishops, absolutely not.

There is more and it concerns the other side of the coin: the death of God, not his resurrection. When that genius Friedrich Nietzsche wrote «God is dead» (God is dead), he was not composing a consolatory song about the ultimate destiny of the sacred, but I was diagnosing, with ruthless clarity, the collapse of the moral foundations of the modern West. His was a tragic announcement, not a springboard for an optimistic humanism. He knew well that the man who killed God has no idea how to bear the weight of that act:

"God is dead! God remains dead! And we killed him! How will we console ourselves, the killers of all killers? […] It's not too big, for us, the greatness of this action? We must not become gods ourselves, to at least appear worthy of it?» (F. Nietzsche, The Gay Science, aphorism 125).

A man forced to become god just to support the void left by God: nothing but cheap consolation like the They're just songs, as another very talented singer-songwriter sings, Edoardo Bennato.

Use “God is dead” as a premise and "God rises again in what we want" as a solution simultaneously betrays two thoughts that both deserve greater respect: traditional Friedrich Nietzsche, reducing his tragic diagnosis to a lyrical pretext; and betrays the Christian theology of the Resurrection, reducing it to a collective inspiration of good intentions, careless about it, as the Apostle Paul teaches, our faith can be born or it can die:

"But if Christ has not been raised, therefore our preaching is in vain and your faith is also in vain" (1Color 15,14).

It is therefore not up for debate whether Francesco Guccini had faith, he didn't have it, or cultivated - as Umberto Folena writes in his conclusion - "an ever cultivated hope". It's his business, now entrust yourself to the judgment of God, the true one. The question that remains and which concerns not Guccini but whoever commemorated him in this way is another: can a newspaper that presents itself as the voice of the Italian Bishops publish, without a single word of doctrinal distinction, an equivalence between the Resurrection of Christ and the collective good will of man? Such an equivalence is not theologically neutral: expresses a clearly heterodox thought of modernist origin condemned by Saint Pius Feeding of Dominic's Sheep (1907), that is, the reduction of dogmatic truth, objective and revealed, a projection of the immanent religious feeling of the believing subject. And if this happens without anyone, in the editorial office of the Bishops' newspaper notice this, where we should look for a healthy ecclesiology today, maybe on the Manifesto, maybe up Micromega? Undoubtedly, the third page of Manifesto as well as the culture articles of Micromega are and remain of a highly superior level to those of Future.

Francesco Guccini is dead. Dio no.
