PROSTITUTES ARE ENTERING THE KINGDOM OF GOD BEFORE YOU

Im Kapitel 21 of his Gospel, Matthew shows how the confrontation between Jesus and the Jewish authorities grows ever more pointed and bitter. In particular, after a dispute with the chief priests and the elders of the people over his authority (MT 21:23–27), Jesus speaks three parables, all centred on the refusal, on the part of the leaders of Israel, of the offer of salvation. Here is the passage for this Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time:
«At that time, Jesus said to the chief priests and elders of the people: “What is your opinion? A man had two sons. He came to the first and said, ‘Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.’ He said in reply, ‘I will not,’ but afterwards he changed his mind and went. The man came to the other son and gave the same order. He said in reply, ‘Yes, Herr,’ but did not go. Which of the two did his father’s will?” They answered, “The first.” Jesus said to them, "Amen, Ich sage zu dir, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you. When John came to you in the way of righteousness, you did not believe him; but tax collectors and prostitutes did. Yet even when you saw that, you did not later change your minds and believe him» (MT 21:28–32).
This parable has had a distinctive textual history. Some important witnesses to the text, wie z.B. Codex Vatikanus (B), reverse the order of the sons, so that it becomes the second son who answers the father that he will not go, only to go to the vineyard after all. This may be due to an ideological reason bound up with a particular reading of the history of salvation: the first son, who says he will go but then fails to act on his word, would already have been identified by some Christian copyists with the Jews, while the pagans would be represented by the son who says he will not go, but then goes to work. And since this logic was not, aber, supported by the order in which the two figures are presented, the order would have been reversed. On the level of textual criticism, the order currently found in the critical text is to be preferred, even if some doubt remains.
The parabolic account in Saint Matthew is the second to be set in a vineyard (the first is found in MT 19:30–20:16), and belongs to material proper to the first evangelist, and therefore has no parallels in Mark or Luke. Composed of only three verses, it is framed by two questions that draw the listener’s attention — v. 28: “What is your opinion?”, a classic rabbinic formula; und v. 31: “Which of the two” — and is followed by an explanation of his own that takes up the question, left open at v. 27, concerning the authority of Jesus and the baptism of John.
Interpretations of our passage have multiplied over time and vary according to the author. For some Fathers of the Church, the son who will not go to work in the vineyard is unquestionably Israel. This reading has carried within it that theology of “replacement”, also called “supersessionism”, according to which — as a consequence of the claim that all the Jews rejected Jesus — the people of the covenant would no longer have any role in the history of salvation, a role that the Church would then take up in their place. Such a theology is not sustainable, since it would suffice to reread, to be convinced of this, chapters 9–11 of Paul’s Letter to the Romans.
But those to whom Jesus is speaking in the text, those, das ist, who are questioning his authority, are not “all” Israel, but only some of the leaders of that people, as is specified shortly before the parable (vgl. MT 21:23), and as the evangelist will say shortly afterward (vgl. MT 21:45). It is to these that Jesus is speaking, and only to these that he will say a little further on: “the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit” (MT 21:43). This alternative interpretation can be grounded in reasons of a literary kind, but also in the fact that the identification of the son who refuses to go into the vineyard with Israel is not universal: for other Fathers, such as, Zum Beispiel, Saint Hilary of Poitiers, these would be only a part of the Jewish people: the Pharisees, or those who let themselves be influenced by them.
More than the problem of identification – das ist, of whom Jesus is speaking to — on closer inspection the parable seems to be centred above all on another question: that concerning the classic relationship, in the biblical and Jewish tradition, between saying and doing. To do the will of the Father, for Jesus, is not simply a matter of words, but rather of deeds, as emerges in the Sermon on the Mount: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Herr,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven” (MT 7:21). The religious leaders to whom the parable is addressed, who believe they can serve God while remaining faithful to the Torah, do not in fact obey him.
For this reason Jesus reproaches them for not having listened to the message of John the Baptist, who came in observance of “the way of righteousness” (MT 21:32), while paradoxically it was heeded and put into practice by those who were normally considered incapable of following the commandments of God — namely, tax collectors and prostitutes. These are the sons who by their deeds go to work in the vineyard and will enter the Kingdom first. They are those who repent (vgl. MT 21:29,32) und, knowing that they need God’s grace, open themselves to it and receive it. From this point of view — that is, by correlation between words and deeds — the parable comes very close to the concreteness of the Letter of James, especially where it insists on the contradiction between having faith but not works (vgl. Jas 2:14–17).
At the conclusion of the parable, this expression — “the way of righteousness” — with which the account closes could refer either to the history of salvation, into which the Baptist too is inserted as forerunner of Jesus, or to righteous conduct, in keeping with the will of God, which marked the life of John. The concept of righteousness, as Matthew has already made clear in the Sermon on the Mount, takes on a specific meaning and, In der Tat, becomes almost a guiding concept. Matthew, eigentlich, will describe Jesus during the passion — (vgl. MT 27:19, the words of Pilate’s wife: “Have nothing to do with that righteous man”) — in the same way that the Baptist is described. Righteousness is, from the very beginning of the Gospel, the programme that Jesus has resolved to carry out, and which was expressed in his very first words, spoken precisely in the presence of John (vgl. MT 3:15: “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness”). For Matthew, dann, it is above all important to do and practise righteousness (vgl. MT 6:1), as the son of the parable shows in putting his father’s will into practice.
From this parable the Christian learns that obedience to the word and the will of God may pass even through the disavowal of one’s own word and one’s own will. Faith, eigentlich, does not ask us never to err and never to sin, but to acknowledge our error and confess our sin. In that change of heart on the son’s part one glimpses his interior dialogue, together with his coming to terms with reality; there is the audacity of looking oneself in the face, of daring to see oneself in truth, with a view to acting responsibly. In diesem Sinne, far from being a sign of weakness, repentance is a sign of courage and strength. However rare and unpopular it may be, auch innerhalb der Kirche, the gesture of one who acknowledges having erred, who admits to having taken positions that have proven not fully in keeping with the Gospel, and who changes his position in seeking to be more faithful to the Gospel, is a sign of human and spiritual greatness.
