"In those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken " [MC 13, 24-25].

In this XXXIII Sunday in Ordinary Time, through the narration of Blessed Mark the Evangelist, the Holy Gospel gives us the parable of the fig tree [see text of the Liturgy of the Word, WHO].

.

The Evangelist is expressed in a prophetic-apocalyptic style:

.

"And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven " [MC 13, 27].

.

In the olden days when the evangelist drew up this Gospel, a few decades after the death, resurrection and ascension into heaven of the Word of God made man, it was believed that the return of Christ the Lord in glory at the end of time was near. Even the Blessed Apostle Paul believed, and initially he was convinced that he could be present and involved on this earth at the return of Christ the Lord to the end of time.

.

Around the year 52, in the first of the letters addressed to the people of Thessalonica, the Blessed Apostle speaks of the return of Christ the Lord; a return indicated by the greek term presence [Russia], indicating the definitive and manifest divine presence [cf I Ts 4,13-18]. In announcing to the Jews and the pagans the mystery of the Word of God died, resurrected and ascended to heaven, the Blessed Apostle must face each other with the concerns and doubts of those to whom this announcement is addressed, also why he writes:

.

"If we believe that Jesus died and rose again, so too God, through Jesus, bring with him those who have died " [I Ts 4,14].

.

Then followed explain:

.

"The dead in Christ will rise first, then us, that we live and that we will still be alive, We shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the, and so shall we ever be with the Lord " [I Ts 4,16-17].

.

To explain the truth of the faith Russia, the Blessed Apostle uses allegorical images, as the parables through which Christ expressed God, They are useful and effective to convey a very profound message: the mystery of eternal life in communion with God.

.

In the text of the second letter to the people of Thessalonica the Blessed Apostle change the substance of their message and start talking about the terrible events that will precede that day that will mark the end of time, stating:

.

"Do not be fooled as if the day of the Lord were truly imminent".

.

Proceeding then to explain:

.

"Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our assembling with him, please, siblings, not to leave too soon to confuse the mind and alarmed either by spirit or by word, or by letter as from us, as that the day of the Lord is at hand. No one deceive you in any way!» [Ii Ts 2,1-3].

.

Followed at this point that terrible and dramatic story that always should make us think, But perhaps in a very special way in the present that we are living:

.

"Before that day will be a falling away and will be revealed the man of lawlessness, the son of perdition, the one who opposes and rises above every being who is called God or is an object of worship, up to sit in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. Do not remember, when I was still with you, I told you these things? And now you know what prevents its manifestation, which will take place in his hour. The mystery of lawlessness is already in place, but it must be taken out of one who now restrains him. Only then it will be revealed the wicked and the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of His mouth and destroy brightness of his coming, the unrighteous, whose coming will take place in the power of Satan, with all sorts of portents, and signs and lying wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who perish; because they received not the love of the truth and so be saved. And for this God sends them a power of deception so that they believe the lie and thus all those who have not believed the truth are condemned., but they consented to the iniquity [Ii Ts 2, 4-12].

.

That referred to as "wicked man" figure is universally known as Antichrist, which he tells the Apocalypse of Blessed John the Apostle [AP 13,13-14] written during his exile on the Island of Patmos, Also known as the site of the last revelation.

.

The Blessed Apostle, in his work of evangelization, does not fail to remember that the expectation of Russia Christ the Lord certainly can not be lived in a state of lazy apathy, but extremely active and industrious, as we are exhorted to do in the Parable of the Talents, us data to be put to good use, not to be buried and then returned as such to the Lord's return [cf. Mt 25, 14-30].

.

In times of Blessed Marco Evangelista it was thought that this glorious return of Christ the Lord was close. A glory that about two and a half centuries after, the First Council of Nicaea in the year will impress 325 in our profession of faith, Also known as Nicea-Constantinople Symbol, where we profess faith in Russia cheering: «… one day come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end ".

.

Trascorrer Over the centuries the expectation of imminent Russia It has faded, not least for the fact that man is subject to time and time, I often forget that what the time is just a man's problem, not of God, which it is eternal and temporal, that is timeless, because only God reigns eternal dimension.

.

Our Holy Faith contained in the Holy Gospels and the Apostolic Letters reminds us, together with our Profession of Faith, that creation is not eternal, because eternal is only the mystery of God the Creator and the Word of the Word of God Christ the Lord, His only begotten Son.

.

The speech contained in this Holy Gospel It born from a catechetical explanation given to the disciples of Christ the Divine Master, that on leaving the temple invite him to admire the stones with which it was built. The answer of Christ the Lord was above all a prophecy about the future destruction of the temple: ' Verily I say, not be left here one stone upon another " [Mt 24, 2]. Joints on the Mount of Olives, Jesus continued to respond through an entire speech focused on eschatology - a term derived from the greek ἔσχατον [Escaton] which means "the last things" - that is, the end of the world. The eschatological discourse of Christ God has three different levels including the persecution of the faithful disciples [cf. Mt 13,5-13]; the great tribulation before which Christ, God suggested to seek refuge in the mountains [cf. Mt 13,14-23]; evangelical expression used five years ago by Venerable Pope Benedict XVI after its withdrawal from the holy throne said he would retire to the mountain to pray for the Church [cf. talk to’Angelus the 24.02.2013, text WHO]. After that, consumed all these events, The event will take place in the glory of the Son of Man [cf. Mt 13,24-32].

.

Christ the Lord, in this the Blessed Evangelist page addresses to us several warnings, first of all, the invitation to be ever vigilant. And as I often say in my homilies and catechesis, and species of these sad times, remember that it is only allegorical or metaphorical language, They are not allegorical and metaphorical content that instead constitute some, undeniable and absolute truths of faith.

.

Before this happens there will be many warning signs, left to the perception and reading of a man unfortunately increasingly unable to read the signs that now seem obvious in part, in part it seems to fulfillment of all, as he told me in one of our recent private talks the late Bishop and Cardinal Carlo Caffara, with whom I pondered over this long interview on sentence: "So you also: when you see these things, know that he is near, It is coming " [MC 13, 29].

.

The grace of God, through the gifts of the Holy Spirit we have welcomed and made to yield as precious talents, Always allow to salvage our soul for eternal life, just be prepared to go to the Divine Bridegroom, as he urges us to do Parable of the foolish virgins and wise virgins [cf. MC 25, 1-13], which ends with an invitation to watch awaiting the arrival of the bridegroom "for ye know neither the day nor the hour" [Mt 25, 13].

.

this last warning, about the day and time who are not known to anyone except to the Divine Father, It should encourage us not to linger forms of schizophrenic catastrophism, unfortunately often transferred from the literature of the most exalted fringes of some Pentecostals and Evangelicals in the Church Catholic, through the sad and pernicious Trojan horse of the followers of some of our Catholic lay movements posing as genuine exclusive owners of the mystery of the Holy Spirit. The task of the elected, is to create with their own lived a saintly life on this earth the supreme prize of his election, only to be gathered from the four corners of the earth and see forever the light of God's Face, whose eternal words will never pass: «Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass " [MC 13, 31].

.

TheRussia, therefore closed in the secret heart of God the Father, It is nothing other than the time death and projection in the Eternal Absolute, after the Divine Judge, He returned in glory, he judges the living and the dead. It's this one, I repeat, it is not a metaphor or a poetic allegory - as unfortunately not a few say and teach -, but it is an absolute truth of our Holy Faith.

from the Holy Gospel of this Sunday: The poor widow's mite

In this XXXII Sunday in Ordinary Time hath proclaimed the incisive of Santo Gospel narrating the story of the poor widow casting into the treasury of the temple has the only two coins [cf. MC 12, 38-44. Text of the Liturgy of the Word, WHO]. This text presents us with a difficult reality to escape with flights of fancy, because if the concreteness of the gesture of the poor widow is disarming, the admonition contained in it is not just severe: the two coins represent the sense of wholeness. Offer to God all our being without savings and fear, in the future of our becoming certainty of faith all wrapped up in the mystery of God, Christ. And we presbyters, when during the rite of ordination we said "Here I am!"And shortly after we were consecrated priests, in our own way we became in the two coins of the Poor Widow, by throwing into the treasury of Christ God, who has filed and impressed upon us the great treasure of the gift that has marked us with a permanent and eternal character: the ministerial priesthood.

In the final part of this Holy Gospel Christ the Lord says ...

.

"Truly I say to you: This widow, so poor, He has thrown in more than all the other treasure. They have all contributed from their surplus. her instead, of her poverty, He threw everything he had, all she had to live " [Mt 12, 44].

.

This warning is contained stern reminder of our deep responsibility. We men are called to serve the Church by the sacred order of priesthood that makes us unworthy participants in the ministerial priesthood of Christ, we are responsible for this double wealth: the faith of the poor widow and the money of the poor widow. Everything that is offered to God must in fact be used for God, to God and to the glory of God service. All that wealth of gifts we got from the Church and for the Church, our death must return multiplied to the Church, as we learn from the parable of the talents [cf. Mt 23, 14-30].

Following in the footsteps of the divine impropriety of Christ, without false modesty or painful secret places, I wish to ask a question to my conscience as a priest: how we sometimes see administering these two treasures, the patrimony of the faith and the material gifts that come from living members of the People of God? Now that people are talking about Mercy, we should be more aware than ever how far the richness of faith will rest or fall throughout the example. So every day we should ask ourselves: as an example we give to the People of God for him to keep, to develop and to spread the wealth of faith?

At this first question it should follow a second no less painful: in a society where more and more families are struggling to get to the end of the month, as the riches within the Church are divided? How prudent and equitable distribution of these substances are used for the highest decorum of the House of the Lord, for the decent support of his faithful ministers, for the support of the poor and needy?

How many times, in the performance of my priestly ministry in various parts of Italy, I happened to get into the sacristy smelly, to extract from worm-eaten cupboards and means of rotten yellowed overalls dirt, the sacred vestments malodorous, or be compelled to testify the precious blood of Christ within goblets giovabili not corroded inside them? And how many times I then happened to pass by these private housing sacristy of my brother and see inside the latest generation electronic devices, maxi highly expensive television screens ... not to mention the painstaking care with which the brother kept clean your car, full of accessories as useless as expensive? I, too, I always keep my car clean, but that is not an economy car is a car of average sufficiently expensive displacement, which is neither a whim nor a luxury but a necessity for my long and frequent trips, often carried out in a state of bad weather and especially for journeys of hundreds of kilometers. But, first car, which is certainly well preserved, I keep clean the Tabernacle of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Several times I happened to find in fact some tabernacle of dust and grease caked, even a dead fly inside the ciborium.

How many times, in the church dishonor and scandal to the People of God - whose eyes some things never escape - just happened to watch the stories of some poor priests entered in the seminars, maintained to training studies for the priesthood by the good heart of a benefactor or the attentions of the diocese, that their deaths have left considerable inheritance to their beloved grandchildren, But not a single penny to the Church, everything after living a life marked by the greed and avarice?

To make it worse all, is that while these accumulated treasures for nonmembers, not to the House of God, not to the poor and needy of his Holy People ... their other brothers entered into ecclesial and pastoral contexts less happy - or if you prefer less profitable - they had to cash in with their family, because they did not manage to move forward, because they had no money to put petrol in the tank car to go to offer their pastoral services, because they had no money to buy a heavy coat, that should make them from the winter cold.

At the conclusion of this painful discussion but I have a precise utility in the economy of salvation, I invite you to read an encyclical written in the year 1935 by Pope Pius XI, To chatolice Priest, in which the Holy Father did not hesitate to point the finger at certain malpractices of the clergy of yesterday and today, going to the root of potential problems that should always be avoided upstream, but especially offering solutions. For this purpose,, he invites the candidates to the priesthood trainers to understand and above all to perceive what true compassion and how it operates. He wrote in that encyclical Pius XI to the paragraph on the choice of candidates for the priesthood:

.

"Correct the error when you hear, no human consideration, without the false mercy that would become a real cruelty, not only for the Church, which would give a minister or inept or unworthy, but also to the young man himself who, pushed so above a false way, It could be exposed to be a stumbling block to himself and others, with the danger of eternal ruin […]. To get others to embrace the Gospel, the subject more accessible and more persuasive is the view that law implemented in the lives of those who preach the observance " [full text, WHO].

.

This message, and partly the loving drama that lurks behind the two coins of the poor widow. On what can be born or can die on which the faith of God's people and the credibility to his priests are called to serve the Church, certainly not using the Church. This is the embarrassment and the provocation with which Jesus Christ, the Son of God made man and God challenges our indifference and our slumber, asking us now more than ever to announce what has been said on the lines and beyond the lines of his Holy Gospel, not that comfortable and de-empowering often we interpret, the sad and disastrous order to evade the truth, until omit to lead people to know the truth that will set us free [cf. GV 8, 32].

The two money of the poor widow have a profound theological significance: represent and manifest the mystery of faith and action of God's grace on the man who, freely accepted the grace, He responds giving himself no savings, so that people can get into the glorious liberty of the children of God. We just need the Church of God and even less of 'poor widow's mite to enrich ourselves or our hungry factions. The Church serves to enrich the whole of humanity, after having become poor in spirit [cf. Mt 5, 3] to become blessed and to gain eternal wealth of the Kingdom of Heaven, aware that Christ has called us to himself and set up for the sacrament of grace "Fishers of Men" [cf. Mt 4, 19], furnished with the best ways of giving our, as his, can be a miraculous catch.

That said, however, it remains unclear the fact that at the same time it is not even permissible lack of sensitivity and generosity on the part of many of our faithful, because the example of the Poor Widow applied to priests, it must also apply to those many believers until they ask and demand for all their human needs, moral and spiritual, do not hesitate to throw the priest out of bed even at two in the morning, but when the priest has to pay heating or electricity bill of the parish church and the premises for the pastoral and charitable activities, that's falling from the seventh heaven many replicate: "But how, you have not the Vatican ... the Vatican Bank?». And then there is the State, there is the Region, there is the Municipality ... in short, there are so many, there are all, except him, faithful miser, that has to be taken until, then takes, But, whether to grant, then it indicates the existence of other, but most other people's wallets ...

This is to say that the Poor Widow coins have a right and a reverse: one for certain priests - of which we first recognize no limits problem, weaknesses, greed and avarice -, the other for those of our faithful who have only hands to take, never to give, downloading on others the responsibility for maintaining the decorum of the House of the Lord and of social structures, youth, charity, welfare and so on.

One of my trainers, with the wisdom of the whole typical of the elderly He told me one day: it is true, certain priests can give the impression of being stingy, or attached to the money, but behind that apparent attachment, which it is then not actually such, They lie in truth quite different fears: the fear of being alone and abandoned in old age. Often, many of these priests, They were very touched - when they were not old people - as cases of priests who died alone and sick. Said this, always my old trainer, continuing to talk about the fears of the elderly priests, he added: "... and species in certain areas, where the faithful often arrive only extended hands to ask the spirit of those to whom everything is due, it has happened that certain priests, become old, sick and no longer exploitable, finding no money found themselves without someone to bring them a glass of water '.

This is the reason why often insist, with young confreres, on the importance of closeness that especially young people should have towards the elderly priests. And I will tell: every time I was close to elderly priests, I have gained a deep well, because a small thing has been the company that I have done to them, or the help I gave to priests semi sick, compared to what they have given to me, sending me their prudence luggage, wisdom, knowledge …

Priests elderly should not be set aside, but far put to work. It would be good that the bishops, especially the young ones, if they held them close as counselors, instead be surrounded by groups of young priests - often driven by personal interests or career expectations conditioning -, because certain elderly are the living historical memory of their dioceses. That bishops will enable them to make the rectors, i confessori, or the spiritual fathers of the seminars, because in order to develop prudence, wisdom, knowledge, no need for the young rectors be sent to do the socio-psychology courses in secular universities, but older people are able to teach young people not only through their virtues, but also through their own defects, that belong to humanity of each of us, presbyters included.

To give another reading at the end of the Gospel story of the poor widow: the poor widow is the Church that gives his all; two valuable coins that she lays into the public treasury of the temple - which is public and visible to everyone -, I have the prudence and wisdom of the elderly.

Therefore, those bishops who say "We must start from the training ', I have always answered: then you have to reboot the elders, since no young, however gifted, You can have the wisdom of the old. Neither may have the momentum of the poor widow, who gave all of herself through the little he had, but what little was his all. And to really give everything takes time, We need a life. And this old did it, while young people need to learn to do it. And to learn how to do that they need the experience of old, especially of those who in the course of their entire Christian and priestly life have tried to transform themselves - for Christ with Christ and in Christ - into the Poor Widow.

San Gregorio monastery in Rome, greek mosaic bearing the motto γνῶθι σαυτόν (know yourself)

This XXXI Sunday in Ordinary Time gives us a Blessed Mark the Evangelist picture in which Christ the Lord shows us the great commandment: «[…] “You shall love your neighbor as yourself”. There is no other commandment greater than these " [texts of the liturgy of the word, WHO].

.

On the pediment of the ancient Temple of Apollo at Delphi It is engraved with the maximum γνῶθι σαυτόν, in Latin Know yourself, translated into Italian: know yourself. This phrase is taken in the work Prometheus Bound Aeschylus, which recommends Ocean Prometheus:

.

"I see so, Prometheus, so I want to give you the best advice, although it has already wily. You always have to know who you are, and adapt to new rules, This is because the new tyrant who now governs among the gods. If you throw words so arrogant and prickly, although his throne is much higher, Zeus can still hear, then the amount of penalties that you suffer now will seem child's play '.

.

The greek original text of my translation have just reported is as follows:

.

"OPD, Προμηθεῦ, Ge and admonish thee I want lῷsta, Kuiper onti poikilῳ. gignoske thyself and new ways metharmosai: TAP and new tyrant in gods. EI d herein rough and tethigmenous throws reasons, Post your although far superior thakon klyoi Zeus, that thee NDV multitude this child labors are dokein ".

.

One might ask: which is no connection, between an expression taken from a passage in the nobler paganites Greek and a completely different of Christianitas taken from the living word of God's Word made flesh? Well, in common is that both the "know thyself," which is at the center of this step of the playwright Aeschylus, both "love your neighbor as yourself" who is at the center of the Holy Gospel passage of this Sunday, Expressions are two poorly understood, consequently poorly presented, worse then finally abused.

.

The know yourself, It is not a simple invitation from the creator of Prometheus to know more or less deeply, but a precise invitation to this creature, over chained to a rock in the head downwards, to have the feeling of being inferior to the god Zeus. The man, to really know himself, to manage himself and then give the best of himself, It must first be aware of its objective limits, certainly not intoxicated in their real or presumed sizes. Suffice to mind in this regard that the man, Whether the political beast, the war beast, scientific or ecclesiastical beast beast, the worst of its inhumanity and hatred towards others, always it expresses and manifests itself when it falls into megalomania.

.

In this season of clerical flattery no more demeanor and retaining, unfortunately we can set about hearing from the pulpits of our churches that next to love as ourselves is the refugee, the migrant and the poor. The boldest preachers will add “the different” e “diversity”, making a display of the lemmas taken from New Vocabulary Clericalese that in the latest updated edition has added many other words: from the includenza to an unspecified hospitality. The expression that a bit’ days then go for higher: "Accompanied by empathy ' [cf. WHO]. Sometimes it seems to be back to the collective of the seventies of the twentieth century, when I capelloni contestants in intellectualisms vein low market if they came out with expressions of the type: «… the dialectic synthesis ideological alternation ". What that meant is not known, but certain expressions were shot, especially everyone could tear out from them what better way non-preferred, thus giving way to a sense that there is.

.

To love one's neighbor as oneself, man must know himself and know who is, by whom it was created and for what. He needs to know why, our ancestors, They have permission to sin - and by sin death - to get into the world scene, then who the man was saved and redeemed: by Christ who became new Adam, while the Blessed Virgin Mary rose to the status new Eve. In this process of knowledge, that's holy sizes and diabolical limitatezze alternate; and this alternation is generated by original sin that has stolen us to our primal sanctity, to which we can still go through the sacrifice of Christ the Lord on the cross, "The Lamb of God […] he who takes away the sin of the world!» [cf. GV 1, 29].

.

To love our neighbor as ourselves, First we must first love ourselves as creatures created in the image and likeness of the living God, then you need to mirror this in the other, imprinted in which to contemplate the very image of God that one day she said: "Let's make man in our image, our likeness " [Gen 1, 26].

.

Loving your neighbor means loving God's image stamped on us and then reflecting it in the other, in the next, reading those words in it the beginning of time: "Let's make man in our image, our likeness ". If we do not know ourselves, and we do not seize in ourselves the image of God, if we do not treat ourselves as the living temple of the Holy Spirit, we could never reflect this in the other, in the next, loving him this God and eternal imprinted, recognizing in it a living temple of the Holy Spirit. Failing that, we run the serious risk of falling into emotional empathy, reducing ourselves, it gives believers of Christ, a worldly philanthropists, trying to do good in the way they like it in the world. And on the day of our judgment, before the Divine Judge will discover that we have not loved, they did not know who we were, where they came from and towards what destination had to walk. While on us resonate the phrase "what reward have ye? Do not even the Gentiles?» [Mt 5, 46]. And finally: «Via, away from me, cursed, the eternal fire, Prepared for the devil and his angels " [Mt 25, 41].

.

And so we will know the true and deep love of God, punishing and uses mercy [cf. Tb 13, 1-18].

“Turn the other cheek” it means to be humanly and spiritually superior people, certainly does not mean to be cowards

– Homilies to the Gospel –

TURN THE OTHER CHEEK IT MEANS TO BE PEOPLE humanly and spiritually HIGHER, DOES SOME SAY BEING COWARDS

.

How to read the phrase of turning the other cheek, place the Holy Gospel offers us no roads impossible to follow, but of the possible ways, purpose of which is to lead us to eternal salvation? The Catechism of the Catholic Church, stating that there is a just war and that "Legitimate defense is a grave duty for whoever is responsible for the lives of others or the common good", Is it contrary to the precepts of the Holy Gospel?

snoopy turn the cheek alotra

the wisdom of Snoopy

This page of the Holy Gospel Beato Evangelista Matteo must be understood in its depth, because penetrating deeply the Word of the Lord that we understand that the Word of God made man intended to send. And what Christ is not transmits a message addressed twenty centuries ago to a group of disciples, or to the nations of the earth and of that historical period; He sends us a living message. This is the reason why we refer to the Holy Gospel noted as "living word". And more than merely formal, the difference that exists between the Holy Gospel and the word of Homer and Virgil, between the rhymes of ancient Palermo court of Frederick II of Swabia, the word and the rhymes of Dante Alighieri toschi, Giovanni Boccaccio and Francesco Petrarca, It is a whole substantial difference. Those of many ancient authors are dead words that we make lives through their study and their spread. But are we to make live these words finite that tell stories, events, society and men who belong to a dead and buried past lives through these works. The Gospel tells us of finished, but of 'Infinity, It is not a word that lives in history closed, but open a word that opens the story to be our present and our future become. This is because the Holy Gospel word is not enlivened by us, but a word that makes us alive. That's why at the end of the proclamation of the Holy Gospel during the celebration of the Eucharistic Sacrifice of the Mass, The priest or deacon concludes by saying: "Word of the Lord".

.

As you may recall, in the Gospel of weeks ago, Christ the Lord reminded us: "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt have lost his savor, wherewith shall it be salted?» [cf. Mt 5, 13-16]. And salt is Christ who gives savor and meaning to our lives. And if we lose the flavor of Christ, no one can make this salt salty. The Word of God that gives life to us makes us salt that gives flavor and makes us salt of the earth.

.

Christ the Lord, towards the end of the Gospel of the Blessed Evangelista Marco, to clarify the essence of his living word, he claims: «Heaven and earth will pass, but my words will not pass " [cf. MC 24,35]. This is to remind us that He is the living Word that gives us life, It is the spice that gives it flavor and that through us gives flavor to our being and existence, accompanying us until the day that the Lord Christ: "He will return in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end". And if we do not understand and we do not go into this thinking, here is that when after the proclamation of the Holy Gospel we recite the I believe, we run the risk of reciting a nursery rhyme learned by heart, instead our Profession of Faith; a nursery rhyme that we risk not even understand the meaning.

.

In this passage from the Holy Gospel, of expressions that are contained on the one hand they surprise, on the other we tend to interpret as something not feasible. Let's start from the phrase that is difficult to understand: «But I tell you not to resist evil; rather, if one gives you a slap on the right cheek, you turn to him the other ".

.

If we enter the false order of ideas that the Holy Gospel offers us ways and lifestyles impractical, then we run the serious risk of reducing it to a set of short stories full of historical truth and the highest ethical values, but on par Odyssey and Iliad, thus making it a "dead word over" and not a "living infinite word".

.

With this sentence, Christ the Lord tells us that perhaps before an army that invades us risking our lives, we have to run towards the attackers singing peace and love ? And how do you reconcile, the invitation to turning the other cheek, the fact that the Catechism of the Catholic Church has always admitted the use of defensive war, if there is no other means of defense against unjust aggression? I remind you that in fact the text of the Catechism, where they list the conditions of a "legitimate defense by military force", It is clearly stated: "These are the traditional elements enumerated in the doctrine called the 'just war'. The evaluation of these conditions for moral legitimacy belongs to the prudential judgment of those who have responsibility for the common good " [cf. n. 2309]. Continues the text of the Catechism: "Legitimate defense is a grave duty for whoever is responsible for the lives of others or the common good" [cf. n. 2321]. And here please note that the self-defense through war is called 'a grave duty "on the part of those who" is responsible for the lives of others or the common good ".

.

How to read the phrase of turning the other cheek, place the Holy Gospel offers us no roads impossible to follow, but of the possible ways, purpose of which is to lead us to eternal salvation? The doctrine, the magisterium and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, They are perhaps in stark contrast to the precepts of the Holy Gospel, even l'I invite turning the other cheek ?

.
Let's see what is the sequence of the words of the Lord Jesus that before inviting to turning the other cheek he claims: "You have heard that it was said: An eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth '. And by "you have heard", Christ the Lord refers to what was known as the Law of retaliation contained in the Book of Exodus [21, 24]. A law that was created when it was useful because it aimed to curb revenge and to avoid vendettas between different tribes went on for generations, with a murderous hatred handed down from father to son. And before the Law of retaliation, which it aimed to this positive action of containment, the Lord Jesus says: "But I tell you not to resist evil; rather, if one gives you a slap on the right cheek, you turn to him the other ".

.
If in primitive times the Law of retaliation He is trying to curb the evil, Jesus requires us instead a spirit tended to overcome bitterness and conflict. It does not ask us to succumb to evil powerless, but let it drop, implying, to him who does evil, As his gesture is useless and can not produce anything.

.

Some opponents blinded by the wickedness, through their violent gestures challenge and require to receive reactions, so that the evil produces evil and violence more violence. The believer does not respond bowing his head before the arrogant and fearful showing weakness; acts in a superior manner and skilful, giving the evil an entirely different way of looking at things.

.

And here I also invite you to reflect that Christ the Lord does not speak of severe beatings to the sound of punches unleashed in full force, or a stick or assaults with weapons in use at the time. He speaks of a slap on the right cheek. And the slap, more than a gesture of violence, was considered - then as today - a gesture of offense, an affront. Until all ancient times, hit on the face with a glove, or throw a glove to the face, was an act of infringement of other people dignity and integrity. In the era of Christ the Lord gloves were not in use, but the gesture of the slap on the cheek was equivalent to the glove challenge, which you can be answered in two ways: with a duel from which will emerge a dead, or by a smile and turning his back to the provocateur with the air of someone suggests: "But you, really you think I'm really willing to risk your life and my life, to generate a bereavement in a family and a feeling of hatred between two families, that dell'ucciso towards that of the man who, for a gesture which does not confer all the capacity that would aim to deprive me of my honor?». The turn the left cheek to this ancient challenge of the glove, It is a lesson and a clever provocative answer to make it clear that I aggressor, as a person prudent and wise, I am aware that evil never leads to any result, while the lack of control of the pride hurt, might it lead to reactions and actions of all proportion.

.

It happens quite often that people in distant and hostile to the Christian world up attacking us in the worst way, through verbal violence, falsehoods spread in the press, slanders designed to spread art and then with diabolical malice ... and if any of us dare to react - for example, even with a simple and legitimate lawsuit for defamation -, promptly reply with quote one of the few evangelical phrases that know little about and that consequently cite worse: "Ah, but you have to turn the other cheek, as the Gospel says!».

.

Celebrities, There are many other passages of the Gospel that those who attack us in many ways it suits do not know or ignore, for example the fact that Christ the Lord himself resorts to physical violence by taking a whip merchants in the courtyard of the Temple of Jerusalem [cf. MC 11,15-19; Mt 21,12-17; LC 19,45-48]. And what about the aggressive and insulting language Christ the Lord to the scribes, Pharisees and teachers of the Law? Or should perhaps explain that offensive capacity has defined the high notables as "brood of vipers"? [cf. Mt 23, 33]. Say it to someone "You're a viper", is a direct insult to him personally, but to say to a person that it belongs to a generation of vipers, It means not only hits him, but its full stem of belonging, family or religious that. As you can see, there are also these passages in the Holy Gospel, as others in which the Lord Jesus reminds us: «Do not think that I have come to bring peace on Earth; have not come to bring peace, but a sword " [cf. Mt 10, 32], indicating clearly that the sequela Christi, the way back to the Lord to safety, it is also a struggle both with ourselves and with others. That fight to where the Blessed Apostle Paul invites us in precise words: "The whole armor of God, to be able to withstand the wiles of the devil " [cf. Ef 6, 10-20].

.

Faced with a slap, before the glove challenge, it acts as Christ the Lord teaches us, using more wisdom than the foolishness dell'attaccabrighe seeking violence at all costs. But before the mystery of evil that seeks to destroy us, there must not only fight, but move their war. And if the dangerous offender says "... but on the Gospel it is written that I can attack and destroy you and that you must turning the other cheek, while I exercise my “sacrosanct” law aimed to make the evil prevail ", in such a case to be answered: "I'm sorry, but you do not know him the Gospel, or you may have misread and, after misread, I've got worse ".

.

The turning the other cheek It means showing superiority human and moral, wisdom and sense of measure; It means to give a well-deserved lesson to those who, in exchange for a provocation, receiving as a response would require a disproportionate reaction. The turning the other cheek does not mean, however, give in to evil in any way intending to overwhelm, because Christ, on the cross, He did not die because he refused to fight against evil, but just why “guilty” to have fought evil and launched the call to fight evil, until it became, for this, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world [CF Jn. 1,29].

To live the resurrection of Christ is necessary to abandon dreams, fables and idols, penetrate the real obedience of faith and do the Father's will

TO LIVE THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST YOU MUST LEAVE DREAMS, TALES AND IDOLS, ENTERING THE ROYAL in obedience OF FAITH AND DO THE WILL OF THE FATHER

.

On the upside stone of the risen Christ who has conquered death, it is up to all of us a great task: choose between dreams and fairy tales in which everything collapses, or get in the way along the Via Emmaus. Because only in this second case, God will meet us as a traveling companion, He will call us "friends", visit our vineyard and truly turn into his work, after the man will be able to give up their omocentrismo to enter the size of Christocentrism.

THE RESURRECTION - TEMPERA 1996 - CM.50 X 35

the resurrection of Christ, works of Quirino de Ieso, year 1996, tempera on canvas 50×35

On the scene of the resurrection women are witnesses and protagonists, as recounted in the Gospel of Luke Blessed Apostle read during the Easter Vigil and the Gospel of the Apostle John proclaimed blessed in this day of Easter. Lapidary are the words that the angel to the women in Luke's Gospel: “Why look among the dead for one who is alive?”. These are words from which is built on the rock of the tomb an eternal truth, what prophets they sent to a people who sought the Lord in the places and spaces where he had left yesterday, The Almighty Creator is always on and always goes before, inviting us to an endless journey, as stated in the glorious praise Easter victims: «I hope, has risen / He goes into», Christ my hope is risen, and precedes her in Galilee.

In the religious history the man often tends to move forward and backward to look backwards. While on the other hand God wants man he always looks forward, because starting from the meeting of the Risen Lord to the disciples on the road to Emmaus [cf. LC 24, 13-53], we were thrown forward to eternity. For who is afraid of this and becoming future, He ends up living caught between a past that does not pass and a present still often made of dreams and fantasies.

In certain situations of immobility We tend to live in their small paralyzed masked possessions behind imaginative untouchable traditions castles, oblivious to the warning given of the Lord Jesus warns: "Thus have ye made the commandment of God by your tradition. Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying: This people honors me with their lips but their hearts are far from me. In vain do they worship me, teaching doctrines that are precepts of men» [cf. Mt 15, 7-9].

Jesus Christ is not locked in the tomb of yesterday's truth, because the truth is alive and lives in Jesus Christ Risen One who always brings impressed upon him the indelible marks of passion. Christ is the one who always rises again, which always renews the mystery of his body and his blood I live through the Eucharistic Mystery.

The Holy Spirit, which is divine gift given by the Risen at Pentecost, He pushes us forward, We just do not confuse the Holy Spirit with the spirit of their own; just do not have an imaginative Jesus to our size who happens to say and command certain men exactly what they want to hear, giving life thereby to one of the worst sins: closing the grace of God. Now you understand well that close and leading a neighbor to close the grace of God in the name of God, is terrible ungodliness.

Risen Christ full of grace and blessings their work, those he scrolls and inspired, while the works created by human hands for the glory of man - as the Psalmist says - die with man, just like the idols, He teaches the psalm 114 which recites: "Their idols are silver and gold, Work of human hands. They have mouths but can not speak, they have eyes and do not see, They have ears but can not hear, They have noses and smell not. They have hands and not palpate, they have feet and walk not; from the throat do not have sound. Are like them who make them and who trust in them ". And the works of God - as the Gospel states - are trees that do not recognize or fantasies or illusions in which they lived; God's works are recognized by the life and the fruits of life.

And if a dry and does not bear fruit trees, there is little to wonder where they went wrong others, but one wonders: where did we go wrong us? Above all we must ask ourselves to what extent we are closed to the grace of God and the mystery of his works to follow the works of man; works that eventually, even after many years, They prove unsuccessful because of the fruits that do not give, or for patients who produce fruits, thus giving us the death and not to that life which is eternal adoration and communion with the Risen. A communion that always passes through the devout obedience to the universal Church, to the particular Church and its pastors, the bishops; especially when it is not easy to pay their obedience. But when obedience is not easy, if anything because the pastors may be weak, distant, or simply unable to shoulder their responsibilities, it must be 'more than ever given, because otherwise it risks only to obey the whims of ourselves, our reasons and our grudges. And who does not instruct this docility and obedience to the Church and its Pastors, which these days can be very difficult and painful to put into practice; who creates his own world in World, its own church in the Church, It is not a pastor and not a teacher, but a blind guide. And as the Gospel teaches us: "When a blind guide the blind, both will fall into a ditch" [cf. Mt 15,14].

5. Easter Vigil 2014

Ariel S. levi Gualdo, Easter Vigil

The mystery on which our faith is built, as he explains the Blessed Apostle Paul, it is not the stone sealed the tomb of Christ, because "if Christ has not been raised, then empty is our preaching is in vain and your faith " [cf. The Cor 15, 14]. The mystery of our faith is thus the inverted stone from the one who is no longer among the dead but among the living, and that we meet along the Way to Emmaus making recognize the breaking of bread [cf. LC 24,13-35], inviting us to the eternal journey and certainly not to a standstill before the idols which are the fruit of human hands.

Inviting the man to be pleased, "the law of the Lord" and "meditate on it day and night", the psalmist, Psalm n. 1, nell'ammonirci is very clear and precise words to tell you the right man, the one who really does the will of God: "It will be as a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither; succeed all his works ". And will, his works, because in truth they are works of the Lord, that man was and is only one faithful instrument.

.

9. Easter Vigil 2014

Ariel S. Levi di Gualdo, Easter Vigil

On Easter night It took place the resurrection of the body of the Word of God Incarnate, that his flesh was sullied on the tree and is now adored in heaven and on earth. It is no coincidence that Christ God is risen night, because with his resurrection has enlightened our darkness, as the Psalmist sings: "Enlighten my lamp, man; my God, enlighten my darkness " [Shall 17, 29].

Risen Christ calls us to life and it makes us part of life, inviting us to escape from death; He calls us to do the works of the Lord and bless his works before the Lord of life: "Bless the Lord, you all, his troops, his ministers, who do his will!. Bless the Lord, all his works, in all places of his dominion. Bless the Lord, my soul" [Shall 102].

.

12. Easter Vigil 2014

Ariel S. Levi di Gualdo, Easter Vigil

It is on this that we can accommodate and build our intimate participation in the resurrection of Christ, with which humanity is dead to sin and reborn to life, or hand deliver us to death in the worst way: We laid our human works in the name of God, but giving the inevitable fruits: a dry tree, the desolation, Finally, a death that will come sad after having spent his life in a dimension of possession and closing angry until the last breath of life. And all this in the name of "self" to run through "God's will", while around us everything collapses. And it all breaks down our fault that we do not want to see, not the fault of the other. Around everything collapses because we, locked in our illusory and immovable convictions, although having heard every day the Word of God, in truth we have not heard, because we were too busy to listen to the reasons of our "I" instead of the reasons of God through the Blessed Apostle Paul's voice warns us saying: «The day will come, indeed, in which […] having itching ears they, will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own likings, refusing to listen to the truth to turn to fairy tales " [II Tm 4,3].

And acting in this way, or seeding tales that then, in the end, They fall to pieces along with the idols made by human hands, You do not reach certain communion of saints to enjoy the beatific vision of the mystery of God the Creator, Christ the Lord of the Incarnate Word, Holy Spirit Comforter.

13. Easter Vigil 2014

Ariel S. Levi di Gualdo, Easter Vigil

"Risen Christ has set us free" - warns the Blessed Apostle Paul [Gal, 1] - "free for freedom; so stand firm and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery ". Never and no one, we must allow ourselves to impose slavery, especially by men who would like to make others slaves to their whims and fancies of their own in the name of God, after brazenly proclaimed messengers and voice of God.

Since the Garden of Eden, the choice is up to us: deliver us to everlasting death or follow our natural calling: participate in the resurrection of Christ God who now sits at the right hand of the father and that one day - never forget - "will return in glory to judge the living and the dead". And Christ, place that "every tree is known by its fruit" [cf. LC 6,44], with those who have never given up even for a moment of their existence to themselves to be truly his, they have not really served Christ and his Church, but who used instead of Christ and his Church, It is very severe: leave them in meal to death. Suffice it to recall the parable of the barren fig tree: Jesus, seeing a fig tree along the road, He sought in it the fruits, ma, finding him rich only in leaves, He pronounced the sentence of that tree [cf. LC 13, 6-9]. The Lord Jesus did not say at all: poor thing, It does not bear fruit because of the other. Far from it, the divine Master said that the lack of fruit was whole fault of the barren fig tree.

Was Christ, before an act of perfect repentance, He has saved the good thief opening to him the gates of Paradise [cf. LC 23, 38-43], the same can do with us; the same can do with
those who are in a sterilized vineyard that in truth the Lord, that vineyard, He did not desired, It is the work of men's hands and not the work of God. In this case it is necessary and urgent to take note of reality, follow the wise admonition of the Apostle Paul Blessed, abandon the fairytales and fantasies [cf. II Tm 4,3] open to a truth - which is often bitter and therefore not easy to accept - and pray to the Lord with the words of Psalm 79 which recites: "Man, Look down from heaven and see and visit this vine ". And the Lord visited us, but first you need to be aware of our error and above all the absence of God in the vineyard man wanted for fundamental research of the glory, then pray that, despite our mistake, grace us succor and transform that land in God's vineyard. Otherwise you risk dying incattiviti as one of the two thieves, that instead of asking for grace and forgiveness, despite being battered and pained in her whole body affixed to the pole of the cross, instead manifested closure, I decline, anger and aggressive spirit to the last breath of life. Just as do those who, before the failure of their works, They do not return to where they started even before the destruction, to pain, to sickness and death.

In the Johannine Gospel There is the beautiful image of Mary suffering and lost before the tomb, that says: "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb and we know not where they have laid!» [CF Jn. 20,2].

In Luke's Gospel, women paralyzed by the pain before the empty tomb stone, two angels in shining garments say: "Why do you search among the dead for one who is alive?» [LC 24, 5]. With these words the angels tell the women to look beyond the size of the whole temporary grave that marks only a moment of transition. For Jesus it is no longer in the past, Jesus is not a collection of memories made all of real estate and related to days gone by; Jesus lives in the present and is projected into the future, Jesus is the '' Today 'eternal God who invites us to walk, and the Alpha the A Omega that "recapitulates in himself all things, those in heaven and things on earth " [CF. Ef 1,10], one whom the holy bishop and father Augustine called the Church Christ the whole, which is beginning, center and goal of our entire humanism.

On the upturned stone of Christ risen who has conquered death, it is up to all of us a great task: choose between dreams and fairy tales in which everything collapses, or get in the way along the Via Emmaus. Because only in this second case, God will meet us as a traveling companion, He will call us "friends", visit our vineyard and truly turn into his work, after the man will be able to give up their omocentrismo to enter the size of Christocentrism, why otherwise, you can easily do without acting: "Come your kingdom, your will be done, as in heaven, so on earth ", because it would only be words without any human sense, and Christian.
