The commemoration of All Souls An 2 November reminds us that death represents the outermost limit of human experience, the supreme scandal before which natural reason comes to a halt. In a largely secularised society, which oscillates between concealing death and reducing it to a clinical banality, the Christian is called to reaffirm the realism of the faith. We have not lost our departed: not because they live on in some vague psychological memory, aber weil, incorporated into the Mystical Body of Christ, we continue to share with them a real communion, which finds its summit in the Eucharistic Sacrifice. The tradition of the Fathers of the Church helps us to grasp the greatness of this truth, far from any sentimental drift.

The sentimental illusion: the theological fraud of «Death is nothing at all»

In recent decades a well-known poem entitled Death Is Nothing at All has spread far and wide, above all at funerals and through the media, and is popularly and stubbornly attributed to Saint Augustine of Hippo. The text offers consoling formulas such as: «Death is nothing at all. I have only slipped away into the next room». The attribution is a blatant fraud: the text is by Henry Scott Holland (1847-1918), an Anglican canon of St Paul’s Cathedral in London, who delivered it in his funeral homily for King Edward VII in May 1910, in a sermon entitled The King of Terrors.

The error is not merely one of attribution: it is profoundly theological. Holland’s text proposes an almost Gnostic kind of spiritualism, in which death is emptied of its drama and reduced to a mere change of place: «the next room». Catholic theology, following Sacred Scripture, teaches instead that death is an enemy (vgl. 1 Kor 15:26), «the wages of sin» (Rom 6:23), a tearing apart of soul and body that only the Resurrection of Christ could overcome. Saint Augustine would never have played down the drama of human death by turning it into a stroll, because he had clearly before his eyes Christ’s cry on the cross (vgl. MT 27:46) and the tears Jesus shed at the tomb of his friend Lazarus (vgl. Jn 11:35). Christian consolation is not born of denying grief, but of the certainty that death has been conquered.

Saint Cyprian and death as accersitio dominica

The right Christian attitude towards death emerges clearly in the teaching of the Fathers, and in particular in the work of Saint Cyprian of Carthage. From 249-250 the Roman Empire was ravaged by a terrible epidemic, known to history as the «Plague of Cyprian», which between 252 und 254 struck North Africa hard as well. While pagan terror ended in despair and in the abandonment of the sick, the Bishop of Carthage wrote the De mortalitate to instruct and console his flock.

Cyprian addresses the problem of physical evil with deep realism: bodily contagion strikes the just and the unjust alike, since our fallen biological condition is common to all humanity. Yet the meaning of this event changes radically according to one’s faith. For the servant of God death is not ruin, but the end of earthly warfare, a haven of rest and, vor allem, an accersitio dominica, das ist, «the Lord’s summons». Passing from this life is a transitus, a glorious exodus towards the eternal homeland.

With keen pastoral insight, Cyprian rebukes the inconsistency of those Christians who, while praying every day in the Our Father «Thy will be done», then meet the divine summons with rebellion, anguish or terror. If we truly believe that the end of our existence is union with God, the death of the just must be seen as the threshold that leads us into beatitude. Folglich, in chapter 20 of his treatise, Cyprian goes so far as to forbid despairing mourning: our brethren set free from the world by the Lord’s summons are not to be lamented, «knowing that they are not lost but sent on ahead» (non esse lugendos fratres nostros accersitione dominica de saeculo liberatos, cum sciamus non eos amitti sed praemitti). He sternly condemns the black garments of pagan mourning (atrae vestes), recalling that our departed, justified by grace, are already clothed in white robes in heaven. A despairing and ostentatious grief on the part of the living would be a counter-witness, a scandal and a pretext for the mockery of the pagans, who might legitimately doubt the reality of Christian hope in the resurrection of the flesh and in eternal life. The treatise closes with an eschatological vision of rare beauty: our homeland is paradise (patriam nostram paradisum computamus), where a countless throng of relatives, friends and brethren, already secure in their own immortality, await our salvation.

Heiliger Augustinus, Saint Monica and true suffrage for the dead

If the just await us in glory, what becomes of those who, having died in friendship with God, still need purification? How can the Church militant come to the aid of the Church suffering? The answer is given to us by the real Saint Augustine, far removed from the saccharine apocrypha of our day.

Around 421 ANZEIGE, Saint Paulinus, Bishop of Nola, wrote to Augustine to put to him a question of a pastoral and theological nature: does it benefit a dead person to be buried near the «memoria», das ist, the tomb, of a martyr such as Saint Felix? Augustine’s answer is contained in the treatise De cura pro mortuis gerenda. With his customary balance, the Bishop of Hippo makes clear that the mere burial of the body near the relics of a saint has no automatic power to redeem the soul. The value of such a burial concerns the living alone: it bears witness to the love and faith of those who remain and, as they see the tomb beside the martyr, it spurs the relatives to invoke the saint’s intercession and to multiply their prayers of suffrage for the deceased. The efficacy of suffrage, Augustine insists, does not come from the topography of the cemetery, but from the means of grace entrusted to the Church and rooted in the merits of Christ: the Eucharistic Sacrifice, liturgical prayers and almsgiving.

This clear doctrine is rooted in the most intimate experience of Augustine’s own life: the death of his mother, Saint Monica, at Ostia on the Tiber in 387. Im Geständnisse Augusti-ne records with emotion his mother’s last wishes. Faced with her sons’ anxiety over where they should bury her body, far from her native Africa, Monica replies with the supreme freedom of one who has placed all her certainty in God: «Ponite hoc corpus ubicumque: nihil vos eius cura conturbet; tantum illud vos rogo, ut ad domini altare memineritis mei, ubiubi fueritis» («Lay this body anywhere; let no concern for it trouble you; this only I ask of you, that you remember me at the altar of the Lord, wherever you may be»; Geständnisse, IX, 11, 27).

This lapidary sentence demolishes every purely earthly attachment and reveals the heart of the dogma of the Communion of Saints. Saint Monica does not ask for flowers, she does not ask for mausoleums, she does not even ask to be remembered in vague, melancholy thoughts. She asks to be remembered «at the altar of the Lord».

The Eucharist: the true place of encounter

In this patristic perspective, which Thomist theology later admirably systematised, we understand that we and they converge on the one centre of gravity of the universe: the Eucharist. Saint Thomas Aquinas teaches that the Eucharist is the sacrament of the unity of the Mystical Body and the sacrament of charity (FRAGE, III, Q. 73, ein. 3), which unites in one body what Saint Augustine called the whole Christ: Head and members. When the priest celebrates Holy Mass, the heavens are torn open and the barriers of space and time fall away. At the altar of the Lord, the Church militant on pilgrimage on earth, the Church triumphant of the saints in heaven (those who already wear the white robes of which Cyprian speaks) and the Church suffering of the souls in purgatory (who need the suffrages Augustine describes) are fused into a single, ineffable liturgy of praise to the Father, through Christ, in the Holy Spirit.

Aus diesem Grund, seeking contact with the dead through spiritualist practices, superstitions or forms of purely sentimental devotionalism is not only illicit, but spiritually useless and deceitful. The one true meeting place with those who have crossed the threshold of time is the Altar. In the fragment of the consecrated Host is the living Christ, risen and glorious; and where Christ is, there is the whole heavenly court and there are the souls of those who have died in his grace.

The greatest act of love we can perform for our departed parents, relatives and friends is not to cultivate a paralysing and despairing memory, dressing ourselves in mourning like those who have no hope (vgl. 1 Thes 4:13). True love expresses itself in prayer and, supremely, in offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for them (vgl. Katechismus der Katholischen Kirche, NN. 1032 und 1371). To celebrate Mass, or to have it celebrated, for our departed means immersing their poverty in the burning furnace of divine charity, hastening their full conformation to the glorious Christ. And at the same time it means experiencing for ourselves that, in that Bread of Life, they are closer to us now than they were in the days of their flesh.

We have not lost them; we have entrusted them to the one Lord of life. And in him, at every Mass, we continue to hold them in an embrace that death no longer has the power to loosen.
